Marvel’s VisionQuest is bringing back Paul Bettany as the android hero Vision for one last chapter in the WandaVision trilogy. The eight-episode series premieres on Disney+ on October 14, 2026. Showrunner Terry Matalas has shared new details about what Vision is going through in this story, calling it a deep look at the character’s search for identity.
What VisionQuest Is About
VisionQuest picks up years after the events of WandaVision. The Vision fans see now is not the same one who married Wanda Maximoff. This version, known as White Vision, was built using the original Vision’s parts and memories but is missing the Mind Stone. Without it, he lacks the emotional intelligence that made him feel more human.
The official description from Marvel explains that Vision has been in hiding after escaping from those who wanted to use him as a weapon. He is searching for new meaning and consults the AI personas inside his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and Ultron. His quiet life ends when a bounty is placed on his head, forcing him to go on the run with a mysterious boy named Thomas Shepard, who may be his son.
Terry Matalas on Vision’s Identity Crisis
Showrunner Terry Matalas, known for his work on Star Trek: Picard and 12 Monkeys, spoke with Empire magazine about the core of the series.
“This is the first time where we get to watch Vision drive the narrative, and understand who he is, who he thinks he was,” Matalas said. “We watch this character go through an identity crisis. It’s kind of the Vision movie, if you will.”
Matalas also explained how Vision spends time among humans while also retreating into his own mind.
“It’s been years since the events of WandaVision. And we pick up with what Vision is now doing in the world,” he told TV Insider. “We’ll find out that it’s been some time since the world has seen Vision flying around and that he is spending time amongst human beings, deciding what it means to be human.”
The showrunner added that the story moves between two worlds. One is the real Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the other is inside Vision’s mind space, located in his quantum processors. Inside that space, he interacts with other AI characters who appear as human avatars.
“The story takes place within his mind space and the rest of it takes place in our proper MCU world, and the juxtaposition of those two tones is really fun,” Matalas said.
James Spader Returns as Ultron in Human Form
James Spader is back as the voice and now the human form of Ultron, the villain he played in Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. In VisionQuest, Ultron appears as a human with a beard and glasses.
Matalas explained why he chose to show Ultron this way in an interview with Polygon.
“It’s funny, people say it’s a budget thing, it’s not, it’s a James Spader thing. I love James Spader. Who doesn’t love James Spader? I just want to see James and I want to see Bettany,” Matalas said. “It is prohibitively expensive to do a CGI robot 24/7, but I also don’t want to see a CGI robot. It’s not going to be able to emote and do the things that James Spader can do with just the twitch of an eyebrow.”
The series reveals that Vision did not actually destroy Ultron. Instead, he kept Ultron backed up in his processors. Matalas teased that Ultron is not happy about being trapped.
“But that doesn’t mean Ultron’s not longing to be back out in the world,” he told TV Insider.
The AI Characters Inside Vision’s Mind
A big part of VisionQuest is the return of several artificial intelligences from Tony Stark’s past. They appear as human avatars inside Vision’s mind. The cast includes:
- James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S.
- Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y.
- Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H.
- Henry Lewis as Dum-E
- Jonathan Sayer as U
- T’Nia Miller as Jocasta
Matalas told SFX magazine that the show explores how these AIs feel about what happened to Tony Stark.
“What’s that like for an AI, to not be able to protect the one they’re programmed to protect?” Matalas said about F.R.I.D.A.Y., who was present when Tony Stark died in Avengers: Endgame.
Vision Meets His Son Tommy
Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, gave Matalas one simple instruction for the series. Matalas shared this with Polygon.
“He called me and said that it’s the story of Vision, he’s going to meet his son, and he’s like, ‘The rest is up to you.’”
Ruaridh Mollica plays Tommy Maximoff, also known as Speed, Vision’s grown-up son. Matalas described the dynamic between Ultron, Vision, and Tommy as “a three-way father-son dynamic.”
“There’s sort of a three-way father-son dynamic with Ultron and Vision, and then Vision with Tommy. It’s fun, between the three of them,” Matalas told TV Insider.
Paul Bettany on Playing This New Vision
Paul Bettany has played Vision for over a decade, starting as J.A.R.V.I.S. in the first Iron Man movie. Matalas praised Bettany’s understanding of the character.
“He’s an amazing partner. We have always been in lockstep as to what we thought his journey for Vision should be,” Matalas told Polygon. “The perspective he has is his interaction with the actual audience, having met so many people throughout the years, and what Vision means to different groups of people.”
Bettany explained how this Vision uses his mind space to avoid the real world.
“He is attempting to move about in the world in a small way, and then at night download this data and discuss the things that have happened to him with these different AIs,” Bettany told Empire. “But he is also very much using it as an excuse to keep the world and himself at arm’s length. And of course, events conspire to drag him actually into the world.”
Where VisionQuest Fits in the MCU Timeline
Matalas confirmed the timeline for the series in his interview with Polygon.
“Years have passed since WandaVision. I would say we’re about current with Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
The showrunner also said new viewers do not need to watch everything before starting VisionQuest.
“We definitely catch the audience up very simply. So it’s not a hard and fast rule that they need to watch,” Matalas said. “If anything, WandaVision, for sure, because it’s definitely a sequel to WandaVision.”
Fan Reactions to the Trailer
The first trailer for VisionQuest arrived on August 15, 2026, at Disney’s D23 event. Fans on X had a lot to say about Ultron’s human form and Vision’s new suit.
“Mr Ultron in the flesh! Also, cool glasses BTW,” wrote @CooldudeSpader.
“James Spader as Ultron in human form? Yeah, I’m really curious to see what they do with this version of him,” posted @Cinemafeels___.
Vision’s updated costume also got attention. One fan called it the “Best he ever looked,” while another wrote, “THIS SUIT LOOK PEAK.” A third fan noted it “Kinda looks like the comics.”

VisionQuest premieres on Disney+ on October 14, 2026. The eight-episode series will be available for viewers in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, and other regions where Disney+ operates. In India, the series will stream on JioHotstar. The show is billed as the final installment in the trilogy that began with WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024.
Matalas told SFX magazine that he is open to making more seasons if Marvel wants them.
“The second we wrapped, Paul, James [Spader], and I were immediately ready to go into 10 more seasons of whatever this could be. But that’s up to Marvel Studios and the television gods as to what happens.”
