The latest episode of ABC’s hit series Will Trent took viewers on a wild ride that star and director Ramón Rodríguez describes as “Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Romancing the Stone.” Episode 411, titled “He Lives!,” delivered major surprises that will shape the rest of the season.
The March 17 episode sent Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) racing to Puerto Rico after a murdered man turned up with his Uncle Antonio’s (John Ortiz) name. What started as a mission to protect family quickly became a jungle adventure filled with poisonous spiders, a fake FBI agent, and a shocking connection to Will’s greatest enemy.
The Big Twist Nobody Saw Coming
The episode’s biggest reveal came when FBI Agent Elkie, played by Mallory Jansen, turned out to be Adelaide, the daughter of James Ulster (Greg Germann). Ulster has tormented Will throughout the series, and now his daughter is carrying on the family business.
Rodríguez explained the challenge of keeping the twist secret from viewers. “When I read it, I actually really loved it,” he told Collider. “I was like, ‘Oh, this is juicy. And it’s big.’ It was really a large-scale scope. It is our largest episode.”
The actor praised Jansen’s performance, noting that she did “a really great job” of making the character believable as both a potential love interest and a hidden threat.
“You have to let go and understand once you realize that that was a pretty masterful, insane plan to pull all that off,” Rodríguez said. “So now that you’ve let that go, you go, ‘Okay, we’re not going to get hung up on that,’ and hopefully you just get sucked into it.”
A Personal Mission Driven by Family
Unlike typical cases, this episode saw Will operating without jurisdiction, driven purely by fear for his uncle’s safety. Rodríguez emphasized how important family remains to his character.
“I love the motivating force that got him there, which is family,” he shared. “We know how much that resonates for Will, so the fact that family could be in danger, I bought that he would just pick up and go.”
The trip to Puerto Rico held special meaning for Rodríguez, who directed the episode and has deep roots on the island. The production shot in Old San Juan and the rainforest, showing off parts of Puerto Rico viewers haven’t seen before.
“It was incredibly special to go back,” Rodríguez said. “Seeing similar faces of the crew and their pride and having a Puerto Rican director bring the show to the island, there were a lot of high, wonderful, passionate, pride-filled moments.”
Will’s Therapy Pays Off in Unexpected Ways
The episode also showed progress in Will’s therapy sessions with Dr. Roach (Margaret Cho). Her advice to “rebrand” Ulster led to one of the funniest moments in the series.
Will imagined Ulster as a Keebler elf popping out of a tree stump, complete with pointy hat. Rodríguez revealed the idea came to him while scouting locations.
“I looked over, and I was like, ‘What if we made our own tree stump and had him come out of it like a Keebler elf hat on?’” he recalled. “We were dying. Everyone loved it. Our production design team, that is amazing, made the perfect tree stump. Up popped Ulster on the day, and everyone just couldn’t hold it in.”
Germann was “so game and such a great sport about it,” according to Rodríguez, making the scene even funnier than written.
The Dance Scene That Almost Didn’t Happen
One of the episode’s most memorable moments showed Will dancing at a beach party, taking a hat from another man and sharing a kiss with “Elkie” before learning her true identity. Rodríguez revealed the scene was supposed to be much longer.
“That day was our final day in Puerto Rico. We were so up against it,” he explained. “That is one of two takes that we had to do before they pulled the plug on us. It originally was a bigger thing.”
Despite the time crunch, Rodríguez feels the scene works effectively. “If that had been longer, that means something else in the episode would have likely been cut. But trust me, we were all very excited about that scene.”
A Silent Scream That Became the Episode’s Heart
Rodríguez shared that his favorite moment wasn’t originally in the script. At the episode’s end, when Will sees a vision of his mother Lucy, the actor-director made a creative choice.
“I was pretty tired. I was pretty wiped out at that point,” he admitted. “I had this idea the morning that we were going to go shoot that scene with Lucy, and I said, ‘It’d be really cool and maybe even more emotional that, when she whispers in his ear than I scream, we don’t hear the scream. The sound goes out.’”
The choice worked on multiple levels. “I did it to preserve my voice, but that’s also how things are sometimes,” Rodríguez said. “Problems arise and if you’re open to it and looking, you’ll find something that’s actually even better than the original idea.”
When he saw the final edit with the sound dropping out as the camera rose, representing Lucy’s spirit leaving Will, Rodríguez got emotional. “I thought it was quite lovely.”
What This Episode Means for the Rest of Season 4
Rodríguez made clear that episode 411 serves as a launching pad for everything still to come. “This episode really becomes the springboard and the catalyst for the rest of the season,” he stated. “A lot of the things we end up exploring story wise are all related to the events of this episode.”
The hunt for Antonio and the pursuit of Adelaide will drive the remaining episodes. Adelaide proves as manipulative as her father, able to “shapeshift” from friendly FBI agent to cold-blooded killer.
“It’s going to be a really fun journey,” Rodríguez promised. “It’s going to be a real roller coaster from this episode to the very end.”
The Darkest Moments Hit Close to Home
The episode didn’t shy away from Will’s trauma. Adelaide staged a scene mirroring his mother’s death, complete with a dummy in a bed and a recording of baby cries playing from a trash can.
Rodríguez called it “very, very dark and tortured.” He explained, “To see him losing his mind where he thinks it’s her, but then it’s a dummy, but everything looks like it’s staged the way his mom was found.”
The actor hopes viewers understand how deeply these moments affect Will. “He says something about wanting a family. For someone like Will, who never had family, is facing death and realizing that he’s not going to get that, it’s pretty devastating. It’s pretty heartbreaking.”
Making a Movie on a TV Schedule
Directing while starring in the biggest episode yet pushed Rodríguez to his limits. He had half the normal prep time a director would receive for an episode this size.
“I was acting heavily in episode 410, and then I was prepping,” he explained. “It was a real challenge, but I really wanted to do it, so I didn’t make any complaints and I just pushed through. I spent every minute I wasn’t acting prepping and shot listing and looking at locations and looking at casting videos and finding wardrobe.”
He told his team, “Just so you know, we’re making a movie right now. This isn’t an episode of television. This is a feature film on a television schedule and budget.”
What Viewers Can Expect Next
With several episodes remaining in Season 4, Rodríguez teased more surprises ahead. The show continues filming, and he promised audiences will be “floored in many, many ways.”
“The way this episode rocks people and feels like, ‘Oh, wow!,’ is going to continue as the season goes on,” he said.
Will’s journey with therapy will keep evolving. “One of the fun things in this season has been watching Will finally deal with some of these issues in therapy,” Rodríguez noted. Dr. Roach’s unconventional methods, from pickleball to elf costumes, are helping Will find new ways to cope with his trauma.
The hunt for Adelaide won’t be simple. “She’s very Ulster-like, manipulative and smart,” Rodríguez warned. “She’s someone that can shapeshift.”
