Marvel Studios has released the first teaser for its upcoming Disney+ series Wonder Man, and it directly tackles the big question on many viewers’ minds: why make another superhero show? The teaser introduces a world within the Marvel Cinematic Universe where people are tired of superheroes, setting the stage for a satirical and meta look at the genre itself.
The Premise: A Superhero Show About Superhero Fatigue
The one-minute teaser opens not with a classic hero shot, but with a fictional filmmaker being interviewed about his new project. Zlatko Buriฤ plays Von Kovak, a director who is rebooting a classic, in-universe “Wonder Man” property. He immediately addresses the audience’s potential skepticism.
โWhy one more superhero film? Everyone is tired of superheroes. Why go see them in the cinema?โ
Von Kovak insists that his project “spoke to him on a deep level” and presents “an opportunity to reimagine the whole genre of storytelling.” This meta-approach frames the series as a self-aware commentary on the current entertainment landscape. The teaser includes clips from a fictional, low-budget Wonder Man series from the 1970s, complete with colorful spandex and clunky props, poking fun at the genre’s past.
Meet Simon Williams: The Man Behind the Hero
The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a gifted engineer and struggling actor and stuntman in Hollywood. The story follows Simon as he lands the role of a lifetime, playing the superhero Wonder Man in a modern reboot. In a twist of fate, he inadvertently gains real superhuman abilitiesโincluding enhanced strength, speed, and durabilityโwhile working on the project.
This creates a layered narrative where Simon is both an actor playing a superhero on screen and a person with actual powers off screen. The series has been described by its creators as a “love letter to acting,” exploring the craft and the business of Hollywood from a unique perspective.
A Star-Studded Cast of Characters
Wonder Man brings together a talented ensemble cast, featuring several familiar faces from the MCU and new characters.
- Ben Kingsley returns as Trevor Slattery, the washed-up actor who previously impersonated the Mandarin. Executive producer Brad Winderbaum has said the character has a significant and sincere role in the series.
- Demetrius Grosse plays Eric Williams, also known as Grim Reaper, who is Simon Williams’ brother in the comics.
- Ed Harris stars as Neal Saroyan, Simon’s agent.
- Arian Moayed will reprise his MCU role as P. Cleary, an agent with the Department of Damage Control.
- The cast also includes Josh Gad, Lauren Glazier, and Byron Bowers in currently undisclosed roles.
The Creative Team and Comic Book Roots
The series was created by Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Andrew Guest, who serves as the showrunner. Cretton also directed the first two episodes.
In the original Marvel Comics, Simon Williams is a complex character. He first appeared in the 1960s as a villain fighting the Avengers before sacrificing himself. He was later reborn and became a hero, eventually joining the Avengers. A key part of his comic history includes a stint as a Hollywood stuntman, which clearly inspired the direction of this series.
Release Information
Wonder Man is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in January 2026. It will be part of Phase Six of the MCU and will be released under the “Marvel Spotlight” banner, which signifies a focus on more character-driven stories. The series is planned as an eight-episode miniseries.
