What Happened in the Season 2 Premiere?
The first three episodes dropped together on July 1. The season continues with the X-Men team divided and thrown across different eras in time. One group of mutants, including Professor X, Magneto, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Beast, and Bishop, finds themselves in ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C.. There they meet En Sabah Nur, the mutant who will become the villain Apocalypse.
The third episode, “Rise of Apocalypse – Part 1,” gives the series’ version of Apocalypse a backstory—something the original 1990s animated series never did. In this episode, viewers learn that Nur was a slave to Pharaoh Rama-Tut and rebelled against him. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as Rama-Tut fires a celestial weapon at Apocalypse’s base.
Meanwhile, Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Morph, and Storm are stuck in a dystopian future ruled by a different version of Apocalypse.
New Characters and Teams Join the Story
X-Men ’97 Season 2 introduces several new mutant teams and characters. The second episode, “A Force to Be Reckoned With,” brings in X-Factor and X-Force. Cable forms X-Force to stop mutant threats before they become tragedies. The team includes Archangel, Psylocke, Jubilee, and Sunspot.
The season also adds many new mutants to the roster, including Polaris, Quentin Quire, Chamber, Penance, Siryn, Exodus, and Havok.
Michael Johnston, known for his role in the horror film Obsession, joins the voice cast as Nathan Summers, the son of Cyclops and Jean Grey. Chris Potter returns as the adult version of Cable.
Nightcrawler Gets a Bigger Role
Voice actor Adrian Hough, who plays Nightcrawler, shared that his character receives significant development in Season 2. In the original 1990s series, Nightcrawler had limited screen time. Hough explained:
“In the old series, we only ever see him sort of morose and sad, but like hopeful, and you know, proselytizing to Wolverine in the chapel, and then finding out that Mystique is his mother, and [he starts to bond] with Rogue, but I think it comes to fruition in this season.”
Hough also mentioned that Nightcrawler’s journey in Season 2 explores his “personal trauma and sadness”.
Feral Wolverine Makes an Appearance
The trailers for X-Men ’97 Season 2 showed Wolverine in his Feral form. In the comics, Wolverine became feral after Magneto removed the Adamantium from his skeleton. This happened in the Season 1 finale when Magneto ripped out Wolverine’s Adamantium. The Feral Wolverine has natural bone claws and acts more animalistic.
