The story of the world’s most famous detective goes back to the beginning. Prime Video has released the first teaser for Young Sherlock, a new series showing Sherlock Holmes as a teenager. The series will start on March 4, 2026, with all eight episodes available at once on the streaming service. The show comes from director Guy Ritchie, who made the big-screen Sherlock Holmes movies with Robert Downey Jr. This time, Hero Fiennes Tiffin takes on the role of a younger, more impulsive Holmes, long before he became the calm detective of Baker Street.
What the Young Sherlock Teaser Shows
The new trailer introduces a Sherlock who is just starting his journey. We see him arriving at Oxford University in the 1870s, promising his mother he will stay out of troubleโa promise he quickly breaks. The footage shows a raw and unfiltered young man, getting into fistfights and starting to use his famous skills of observation. A key moment in the teaser is a visit to a hat shop, where Sherlock tries on what will become his iconic deerstalker cap, only to be told it is a “lame” thing to wear.
The most important reveal is a friendship that will not last. The trailer confirms that Sherlock meets a fellow student named James Moriarty. This sets the stage for one of literature’s most famous rivalries, showing how it might have begun. The official description of the series says this first case pulls Sherlock into a murder mystery at Oxford that threatens his freedom. Solving it leads him into a worldwide conspiracy that changes his life forever.
The Star-Studded Cast Behind the Characters
Leading the cast as the young detective is Hero Fiennes Tiffin. He is best known for playing Hardin Scott in the After film series. Playing opposite him as the young James Moriarty is Dรณnal Finn from The Wheel of Time.
The series also features a strong supporting cast with well-known names:
- Colin Firth plays Sir Bucephalus Hodge, a character specific to this adaptation.
- Joseph Fiennes takes the role of Sherlock’s father, Silas Holmes. In a real-life connection, Joseph Fiennes is the uncle of star Hero Fiennes Tiffin.
- Natascha McElhone plays Sherlock’s mother, Cordelia Holmes.
- Zine Tseng (3 Body Problem) plays Princess Gulun Shou-an, described as a Chinese princess and Oxford scholar who is also a skilled martial artist.
- The cast also includes Max Irons (Condor) in a supporting role.
Guy Ritchie’s Return to the Sherlock Holmes World
Guy Ritchie is the driving creative force behind this series. He returns to the world of Sherlock Holmes after directing the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes and its 2011 sequel, A Game of Shadows, which starred Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. For Young Sherlock, Ritchie directed the first two episodes and serves as an executive producer.
The series aims to bring the same style of Ritchie’s moviesโfull of action, humor, and a fast paceโbut applied to a younger character. The show’s official description promises it has “all the wit and charm of Guy Ritchieโs Sherlock Holmes feature films”. The showrunner and head writer is Matthew Parkhill, who created the series for television.
