Seven ticket scalpers have been arrested for illegally reselling tickets to various concerts and fan meetings, including the fan meeting of Byeon Woo Seok. The scalpers were caught after significantly overpricing tickets, with some tickets being resold at over 30 times the original price.
Arrest Details
On October 1, 2024, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency‘s Crime Prevention and Order Division reported that seven individuals, including a woman in her 20s (identified as Ms. A) and a male college student (identified as Mr. B), were arrested for violating South Korea’s Performance Act. These individuals are accused of using macro programs to buy a large number of tickets and then reselling them at exorbitant prices on the black market.
How the Scalping Worked
- Macro programs were used to automatically secure multiple tickets within 1-2 minutes of their release.
- The scalpers bought tickets for major fan meetings and concerts from 2021 to August 2024, making large profits.
- Tickets to Byeon Woo Seok’s fan meeting, which had an original price of 77,000 KRW, were resold for 2.35 million KRW.
- Lim Young Woong‘s concert tickets, priced at 177,000 KRW, were resold for as high as 800,000 KRW.
Profit Made by Scalpers
- Ms. A reportedly purchased 331 tickets and earned a profit of 100 million KRW.
- Mr. B sold 15 tickets, including for Lim Young Woong’s concerts, making 13.38 million KRW.
South Korea’s Performance Act
The revised Performance Act in South Korea, updated in March 2024, imposes penalties for illegal ticket resales. Those caught using macro programs to purchase and resell tickets face up to one year in prison or fines of up to 10 million KRW.
