The world of Westeros is getting bigger. HBO has announced several new cast members for its upcoming third season. These additions bring major figures from George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood to the screen for the first time. The show is currently in post-production and is scheduled to return in June 2026.
The new casting news confirms that the civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons, is expanding beyond the immediate Targaryen family. Viewers will meet fierce northern lords, skilled knights, and a fan-favorite archer. These characters will play key roles as Team Black and Team Green prepare for all-out war.
Seven New Actors Join the HBO Fantasy Drama
The list of new faces includes well-known British actors and character actors. James Norton (Happy Valley) joins as Ormund Hightower. Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy) will play Roderick Dustin, also called “Roddy the Ruin.” Dan Fogler (Fantastic Beasts) is set to appear as Torrhen Manderly.
Three more actors were also added to play knights. Tom Cullen (The Gold) will play Luthor Largent. Joplin Sibtain (Andor) takes on the role of Jon Roxton. Barry Sloane (Revenge) is set to play Adrian Redfort. Finally, Annie Shapero will play Alysanne Blackwood, a character many book readers have wanted to see for a long time.
Major Book Characters Finally Arrive on Screen
The new season will finally show several characters that fans of Fire & Blood have been waiting for. James Norton as Ormund Hightower is a significant addition. In the book, Ormund leads the Hightower army and is a major leader for the Greens. His arrival means the show will move past small fights and into large-scale battles.
Another huge addition is Tommy Flanagan as Roderick Dustin. Book fans know him as a fierce and loyal fighter for Rhaenyra. He leads the “Winter Wolves,” old but tough northern soldiers. Dan Fogler as Torrhen Manderly adds more weight to the North’s involvement in the war.
For fans of the King’s Landing politics, Tom Cullen’s character Luthor Largent is important. He is an officer in the City Watch. His loyalties shift during the conflict, which could lead to tense moments inside the capital.
Fierce Knights and Fan-Favorite Archers Join the Fight
The show is also adding several knights who are known for their fighting skills. Joplin Sibtain will play Ser Jon Roxton. He is a brutal fighter for the Greens. He carries a famous Valyrian steel sword called Orphan-Maker. Barry Sloane will play Ser Adrian Redfort, a knight from the Vale who stays loyal to Rhaenyra and joins her Queensguard.
However, the casting that has excited longtime fans the most is Annie Shapero as Alysanne Blackwood. Known as “Black Aly,” she is a sharp-shooting archer from the North. Reports say she may have a bigger role in Season 3 than the book originally gave her. Fans online have reacted very positively to this news.
Production Wraps and Summer Release Plans
The production team finished filming the third season in late 2025. They shot scenes at Leavesden Studios in the UK and also returned to north Wales. The crew filmed at locations like Beaumaris Pier on Anglesey and in Snowdonia National Park.
HBO plans to release House of the Dragon Season 3 in June 2026. The season will have eight episodes, following the pattern of Season 2. The network expects the show to be a major event for the summer. The release will happen just a few months after the Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which arrives in January 2026.
The realm is nothing without the ones who built it.
The crew shared this message on social media along with behind-the-scenes photos. Fans have shown strong support for the hard work of the makeup, costume, and effects teams. Even though some viewers are frustrated with the two-year wait between seasons, the excitement for the new episodes remains high.
