A British artist just showed the world what could have been. Gary Card, a well-known set designer, posted pictures of a scrapped Calvin Klein photoshoot setup on Instagram. The elaborate set featured giant letters spelling NewJeans and the group’s signature rabbit logo.

The artist did not name the group directly. But the props gave it away. Gary Card wrote that the set was made for a very popular girl group. He called it the “CK Bunny” that never got used. He expressed sadness that his work ended up shelved and hopes for a day when he can post these pictures without any worry.

This news comes while the five members of NewJeansMinji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein — are in a legal fight with their agency, HYBE, and its label ADOR. The group has not had new music or group activities since March 2025. This canceled campaign is now seen as one of the biggest “what ifs” in recent K-pop news.

The Elaborate Set That Never Saw the Light

Gary Card is known for his bright and creative designs. He has worked with big names in fashion and music before. The photos he shared showed a massive, detailed space. It had the NewJeans name in huge 3D letters. The playful rabbit logo, which fans call “Bunny,” was also there.

Gary Card mentioned this was a favorite piece of his work. He felt very sad that the client, Calvin Klein, did not use it. The post hinted that the reason for canceling was not about the quality of the work. It was likely tied to the problems happening inside HYBE at the time. Many fans agree that this was a loss for both the brand and the group.

How the Legal Dispute Erased the Group Name

The context for this canceled shoot is the legal battle between NewJeans and HYBE. The dispute became public in late 2024. The members tried to leave the agency, claiming a breach of trust. HYBE disagreed, saying the contract was still valid.

The conflict changed how brands worked with the group. A Calvin Klein campaign did release in early 2025. But something was missing. The video titles and promotional materials did not say NewJeans. They only listed the members’ names: Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein.

Fashion magazines like Vogue also had to avoid the group name. This was a way to get around the legal issue of who owns the trademark NewJeans. HYBE holds the trademark rights. So the members could not use the name for paid work while the lawsuit was ongoing.

From Ambassadors to Legal Adversaries

The relationship between NewJeans and Calvin Klein started very well. In September 2024, the group became global ambassadors. Their first campaign for the Fall 2024 season was a big hit. It earned millions of dollars in media value within just 48 hours. The members wore ’90s-style denim and looked like they were having real fun.

The group even wore custom Calvin Klein outfits for their Tokyo Dome fan meeting in June 2024. The clothes had special crystals and logos just for them. Everyone thought this was a perfect match. The brand represented young, confident energy. The group was at the top of the world.

But the mood changed by Spring 2025. Calvin Klein still released a Spring 2025 campaign. But by then, the group had announced they were stopping activities under the NewJeans name. The campaign now referred to the artists as NJZ, which was their temporary new name. The shift from “global ambassadors” to “artists formerly known as” happened very fast.

Fan Reactions and the Scrapped Masterpiece

Fans, known as Bunnies, are heartbroken by the news of the canceled set. On social media, the reaction is mostly sadness and anger.

“Seeing that set design hurts my heart. We lost a legendary photoshoot because of business fights,” one fan wrote on a popular K-pop forum.

Another fan pointed out that everyone lost in this situation. “The adults (HYBE, Min Hee Jin, and even parents) killed the golden goose. Now we don’t get music OR cool fashion campaigns,” the comment read.

Some discussions blame HYBE for shelving the project to hurt the group. Others argue that Calvin Klein had to be careful. Using the NewJeans name without permission from HYBE could have led to a lawsuit. So the brand likely chose the safe path and canceled the expensive shoot rather than risk legal trouble.

The Current State of NewJeans and NJZ

The legal situation is still complicated. Late last year, a court ruling did not fully side with the members. They lost an injunction that would have let them work freely without ADOR. Following this, ADOR stated that the members are still under contract.

There is confusion about the group’s future. Reports claim that Hanni, Haerin, and Hyein are ready to return to ADOR. However, there are claims that Danielle has been removed from the group due to contract issues. Minji is reportedly still talking with the agency to find a middle ground. The situation is changing very often.

Even with the legal mess, the members are trying to move forward. They opened a new Instagram account called jeanzforfree. They performed at ComplexCon Hong Kong under the name NJZ. But a recent court decision stopped them from using the NJZ name too. This forces them to either go back to ADOR or stop performing completely.

What the Lost Campaign Means for K-Pop

The leaked photos of the Calvin Klein set are a symbol of a bigger problem in K-pop. Creative work involving idols is very fragile. A lot of money goes into making sets, costumes, and photos. But if a contract dispute happens, all that work gets thrown away.

Gary Card ended his post with a wish. He hopes one day he can post the pictures freely without any “buts.” For now, fans only have the designer’s memories and a few leaked photos to imagine what the NewJeans x Calvin Klein magic could have looked like.
