The popular crime drama Law & Order will officially return for Season 26 on NBC. The network confirmed the renewal for the 2026-2027 broadcast season just hours before its upfront presentation on May 11, 2026. This decision ends weeks of uncertainty about the show’s future.

The renewal came down to the wire. NBC executives spent the final days of the week working out budget details and schedule placement. Law & Order will stay on Thursday nights but is moving to the 10 p.m. ET slot. The show previously aired at 8 p.m. Law & Order: SVU will now air at 9 p.m., creating a two-hour block of franchise programming.

Why NBC Waited So Long to Renew Law & Order

Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content for NBCUniversal, explained that the delay had nothing to do with the show’s quality or ratings. The network faced a “puzzle” of scheduling challenges. A civilian version of the competition series The Traitors will take over the 8 p.m. Thursday slot in the fall. This shift forced NBC to rearrange its entire primetime lineup.

“We love the show. We love the Law & Order block. It was very much a puzzle of figuring out what went where. It was just trying to put all the pieces together and figure out how many episodes and when they would come.” โ€” Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content, NBCUniversal

Budget concerns also played a major role in the late renewal. Long-running broadcast shows often face pressure to reduce costs. Law & Order reportedly negotiated budget trims to secure another season. Katz stated there is nothing “drastic” coming in terms of cast changes, but budget adjustments have become normal for shows at this stage.

Organized Crime Canceled While Law & Order Survives

Not every show in the Dick Wolf universe received good news. Law & Order: Organized Crime, which starred Christopher Meloni and moved to Peacock for its fifth season, will not return for Season 6. NBC executives felt the show had “run its course” after four seasons on broadcast television and one on streaming.

The renewal news brings relief to fans who watched the original Law & Order run for 20 seasons before its 2010 cancellation. NBC revived the series in 2022, and Season 26 marks the sixth season since its return.

Current Cast Set to Return for Season 26

The main cast from Season 25 includes Hugh Dancy as Nolan Price, Tony Goldwyn as Nicholas Baxter, Odelya Halevi as Samantha Maroun, David Ajala as Detective Vincent Riley, Reid Scott as Detective Jalen Shaw, and Maura Tierney as Jessica Brady. These actors are expected back for the new season.

Law & Order: SVU also made casting moves for its upcoming season. Juliana Aidรฉn Martinez joins as a new detective, and Kevin Kane got promoted to series regular as Detective Terry Bruno. Mariska Hargitay continues as Captain Olivia Benson, keeping the franchise’s longest-running character on screen.

Fans Celebrate on Social Media After Renewal News

The official Law & Order Instagram account shared the renewal news with a photo of the cast. The caption read: “This investigation is just getting started. #LawandOrder is renewed for Season 26!”

Supporters flooded the comments section with excitement. One person wrote, “Love it!! Excellent cast, such a good show.” Another said, “Thank god!! See you guys in the fall.” A third fan expressed, “Can’t wait for the new season in September. Hopefully Tony Goldwyn comes back also.”

The positive reaction shows strong audience attachment to the series. After more than three decades on air, the show still commands a loyal following.

What Viewers Should Expect Next Season

Law & Order will produce a full season of episodes in its new Thursday 10 p.m. time period. The show will continue its classic “ripped from the headlines” format. Each episode splits into two parts: detectives investigate a crime, then prosecutors handle the case in court.

The 26th season will likely premiere in late September or early October 2026, following NBC’s usual fall schedule pattern. Episodes will stream the next day on Peacock for viewers who prefer watching on demand.
