Witch Hat Atelier Episode 8 is now available for streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix. The episode dropped on Monday, May 18, 2026. For viewers in the US, the release time was 7am PT and 10am ET. UK fans could watch at 3pm BST, while viewers in India got access at 7:30pm IST. The series follows a weekly release schedule, with the first season planned for 13 episodes in total.
The Knights Moralis Try To Erase Cocoโs Memory
The episode picks up right after the events of Episode 7. Easthies, the leader of the Knights Moralis, has caught Coco and Agott. His plan is not to arrest them or give them a fair hearing. He wants to erase their memories of magic completely. He believes this is the safest way to deal with the problem.
Richeh jumps onto Easthiesโ arm to stop him. She yells that the Knights talk about children like they are objects. Tetia catches Coco and Agott as they fall. Then Qifrey arrives and points his sword at Easthies. He tells the Knight that these are his students and he will not let anyone hurt them.
The Knights Moralis check Cocoโs hands for any signs that she is working with the Brimmed Caps. They find only ink stains and calluses from her hard work. They see that the spell she used was a very basic one. Most of the Knights agree to let her go. But Easthies still looks at her with deep suspicion.
The Ink Bottle Mystery Shows Dark Magic
After the Knights leave, Qifrey returns Cocoโs hat and ink vial. She notices something strange. The ink bottle is still completely full even though she used it to cast a spell. This should not be possible. Qifreyโs face changes when he sees this.
The show then cuts to a Brimmed Cap witch somewhere far away. This person cuts their own hand and mixes the blood into an ink vial. The vial looks exactly like the one Coco has. The mystery that started in Episode 5 now makes sense. When the Brimmed Cap carried Coco away during the dragon incident, they switched her ink bottle with a contaminated one.
Tartahโs Condition Shows How Magic Excludes People
Qifrey takes Coco to Kalhn to visit Nolnoaโs ink shop. There she meets Tartah, the shop ownerโs young assistant. Tartah helps clean Cocoโs leg wound. He knows a lot about different types of magic dyes and how they affect spells. Coco gets excited talking with him about magic.
But then things turn sad. After a bright light from Qifreyโs spell test knocks over jars of dye, Coco offers to help clean up. Tartah refuses and gets angry. He says he can never be a witch like her. He has Silverwash Syndrome. This condition makes everything look silver to him. He cannot see colors at all.
Color is the most important part of magic in this world. Different colors create different spell effects. Without the ability to see colors properly, Tartah cannot become a witch no matter how much he learns about magic. The system does not help him. It leaves him behind. He shouts that Coco should go home and that he hates this place.
Qifrey Does The Same Thing He Blamed The Knights For
Qifrey tests the contaminated ink by drawing a small light spell. The result is not small at all. A huge beam of light explodes from the paper, temporarily blinding everyone nearby. Nolnoa sees the ink and knows something is very wrong. He tells Qifrey they must report this to the Great Hall so the authorities can investigate.
Qifrey refuses. He lies to Nolnoa. He says he will handle it himself and walks away with the contaminated ink. But the episode shows the truth. Qifrey does something shocking. He erases Nolnoaโs memory of the whole event. Just minutes ago, he pointed his sword at Easthies for trying to do the exact same thing to Coco. Now he does it to a friend and business partner without any hesitation.
He then lies to Coco. He tells her the shop gave her expensive ink by mistake. He gives her a new vial and a bag of money to make up for it. Coco believes him and smiles. She does not know that her teacher just took away someoneโs memories to protect his own secret hunt for the Brimmed Caps.
Fan Reactions Show Shock At Qifreyโs Actions
Viewers online have shared strong reactions to the episode. One fan on Tumblr wrote about being surprised by Qifreyโs choice.
โAfter that whole thing about wiping ppls memories, he just went and did that ๐ญ donโt get me wrong it was absolutely warranted, but definitely surprising to me at least.โ
Many fans now see Qifrey in a new light. He is not simply a kind teacher. He has an obsession with finding the Brimmed Caps. The show hints that something happened to him in the past. His search for them is personal. And he is willing to hurt innocent people to get what he wants.
Another review pointed out that the Knights Moralis are not the real villains here. They follow bad rules, but they believe they are protecting the world. Qifrey knows better. He understands right from wrong. And he still chooses to do wrong when it helps his goals.

Magic Cannot Heal Anyone In This World
The episode also confirms something important about how magic works. After the mountain collapsed, a boy named Custas got badly hurt. The man with him asked Luluci, a member of the Knights Moralis, to heal the boy with magic. She said no. Magic cannot heal people. It never could.
This is a big change from most fantasy stories. Witch Hat Atelier shows that magic has limits. It can create light, fix broken flags, and break down walls. But it cannot fix a broken leg or cure an illness. This rule makes the world feel more real. Actions have lasting consequences. And people like Tartah have no cure for their condition.
The Brimmed Cap witch mixing their own blood into the ink also raises new questions. If human blood can change how magic works, what else is possible? The show is slowly building a darker story beneath the beautiful animation and kind characters.
Witch Hat Atelier airs new episodes every Monday on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
