The latest episode of the CBS drama brought emotional weight when team leader Cal finally shared his secret health struggles, while fellow Marshal Miles crossed the line after losing a close friend to a drug overdose.
The twelfth episode of Marshals Season 1, titled “The Devil at Home,” aired on CBS on May 17, and is now available for streaming on Paramount+ . The episode turned the focus inward on two of its main characters, each dealing with pain in very different ways.
For weeks, viewers have watched Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) brush off questions about his health. He has been seen visiting doctors and dealing with constant pain in his neck and shoulder, but he refused to tell anyone why . At the same time, Miles (Tatanka Means) received heartbreaking news about his childhood friend Sabrina, who died from a fentanyl overdose. This loss pushed him to go after the people responsible, even if it meant leaving his team behind .
Belle Finally Learns the Truth About Cal’s Health Struggles
The episode’s most emotional moment happened in a quiet room, not during a shootout. Belle (Arielle Kebbel) has watched Cal act strangely for weeks. He kept talking like he did not have much time left. When she pushed him for answers, Cal finally broke down.
Cal admitted that the pain he has been feeling comes from a Pancoast tumor on his lung. He told Belle that this is a rare type of cancer . This was the first time in the entire season that Cal let his guard down and shared his secret with a teammate.
“I just want to feel like I’m not staring this down alone,” Cal told Belle during their conversation .
Belle did not hesitate. She sat next to him and assured him he was not alone. She even offered to help him find the best doctors in Montana using her husband’s connections . The scene was simple but powerful. A soldier who has led his team through dangerous missions finally admitted he was scared of a battle he could not fight with a gun.
Actor Logan Marshall-Green spoke about why Cal kept the secret for so long. He explained that Cal is a trained warrior, but no one ever taught him how to stop being strong and ask for help . The actor also shared that he wanted the show to show the real emotional pain of cancer, not just use it as a story trick.
Currently, only Belle knows about Cal’s diagnosis. He has not yet told his daughter Maddie (Morgan Lindholm) or the rest of the team. With the season finale coming up on May 24, viewers are waiting to see if Cal will share his secret with everyone else .
Miles Goes Rogue After Losing Sabrina to a Drug Overdose
While Cal dealt with his health, Miles faced a different kind of pain. He learned that his childhood friend Sabrina died from an overdose of fentanyl. The news hit him hard. He felt responsible, believing he could have done something to save her .
The Marshals team was already investigating a drug cartel operating on the Broken Rock Reservation. They found a huge stash of fentanyl, enough to poison many people . The drugs were connected to the Jalisco Cartel and a man named Hector Diaz, who had moved to the reservation after marrying a local woman .
But the investigation hit a wall. The DEA told the team to back off. Chairman Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) worried that exposing the cartel would hurt the reservation’s fight against a proposed mine on their land . Everyone seemed more concerned about politics than stopping the drugs.
Miles had enough. He stood up Maddie for their date and decided to take matters into his own hands. He tracked down Diaz in the woods. When he found him, things went bad quickly. Miles ended up shooting Diaz in the leg and held him at gunpoint, ready to finish the job .
Kayce (Luke Grimes) stopped him just in time. He warned Miles that if he killed Diaz in anger, he would never be able to remember Sabrina peacefully. Every time he thought of her, he would only see Diaz’s face .
“If you put him down hard, every time you think of Sabrina, his face will be the only thing you see. Don’t let him rob her memory from you,” Kayce told Miles .
Miles listened and backed down. But the damage was done. Cal had no choice but to suspend Miles and take away his badge and gun . The suspension was made worse because Cal is also Maddie’s father. This puts Miles’ relationship with her in a difficult spot as the season ends.
Kayce Decides to Sell East Camp and Move On
Kayce also faced a major decision in Episode 12. He spent the episode thinking about whether to sell his East Camp land to rancher Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey) . The property was supposed to be a fresh start for him and his son Tate after the events of Yellowstone. But the place holds too many painful memories now.
The barn fire and the death of Garrett made Kayce realize that East Camp might not be a home anymore. It felt more like another burden. Dolly (Daniella Alonso) challenged him directly, asking if the land was still the way of life he truly wanted .
Tate (Brecken Merrill) gave his father the push he needed. He told Kayce that home was wherever his dad was, not a specific piece of land . After thinking it over, Kayce told Weaver he was ready to sell. This decision marks a huge change for the character. For years, the Dutton family fought to keep their land. Kayce is choosing to walk away from that legacy.

Belle’s Gambling Debt Puts Her Family at Risk
Another storyline came back into focus in this episode. Belle has been hiding a serious gambling problem. A man confronted her about a $20,000 debt she owes to a casino . He threatened to hurt her family if she did not pay up soon.
Andrea (Kate Cobb) noticed something was wrong, but Belle kept her secret hidden. The situation is dangerous because the team recently confiscated a large amount of cash from the cartel investigation . Fans are now wondering if Belle might cross a line to solve her money problems.
What to Expect in the Season Finale
Marshals Episode 12 set up many storylines for the final episode of the season. Cal is dealing with cancer while still trying to lead his team. Miles is suspended and may lose his place with the Marshals. Kayce has agreed to sell his land, which changes everything for his future. Belle is in debt and keeping secrets from everyone. Andrea also received a job offer that could take her back to Washington, D.C. .
The season finale is scheduled to air on CBS on May 24. It will also be available on Paramount+ . Viewers will have to wait and see if Miles returns to duty, if Cal tells the rest of the team about his diagnosis, and whether Kayce actually goes through with selling East Camp.
