Nicolas Cage is one of the most famous actors in Hollywood. He has given fans memorable performances in movies like Face/Off, National Treasure, and Leaving Las Vegas, for which he won an Oscar. However, the 62-year-old star recently shared that saying “no” to a movie role can sometimes end a working relationship for good. According to Cage, some of the biggest directors in the business stop taking his calls after he turns down their projects.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Cage talked about his career. He promoted his new live-action series Spider-Noir. But the conversation took a surprising turn. He named three top directors: Christopher Nolan, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Woody Allen. He said they do not contact him anymore because he rejected their movie offers in the past.

“Most of them, they get their feelings hurt and don’t call you back. It’s happened a million times to me. It’s happened with Christopher Nolan, it’s happened with Woody Allen, it’s happened with Paul Thomas Anderson. They don’t call me back.”

Cage Passed on Nolan’s ‘Insomnia’ and Lost Contact

The specific movie Cage rejected from Christopher Nolan was the 2002 psychological thriller Insomnia. That film starred Al Pacino, Robin Williams, and Hilary Swank. It was Nolan’s third feature film. While Insomnia was a critical and commercial success, Cage was not part of it.

Cage explained that after he passed on the role, the communication stopped. Nolan has since directed massive hits like The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Oppenheimer. Despite Cage expressing interest in working with Nolan in the past, the two have never worked together. Fans have often wondered why Cage never appeared in a Nolan movie. Now, Cage gives a simple reason: Nolan does not call back after a rejection.

Paul Thomas Anderson Also Stopped Reaching Out

The pattern did not stop with Nolan. Paul Thomas Anderson is another acclaimed director who stopped returning Cage’s calls. Cage recalled that Anderson showed him an early short film featuring the late actor Philip Baker Hall. Hall famously starred in Anderson’s first feature, Hard Eight.

Cage said they planned to work on something together. But the project “didn’t work out.” Since that early rejection, Anderson has not offered Cage another role. Anderson’s films include There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, and Licorice Pizza. Cage’s name is missing from that impressive list of casts.

David O. Russell Is the Exception to the Rule

While many directors stay away after a rejection, Cage made sure to praise one filmmaker who acted differently. David O. Russell is the director of Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and The Fighter. Cage revealed that Russell offered him a movie “a million years ago.” Cage said no to that offer. However, Russell did not hold a grudge.

Russell later returned with another offer. He cast Cage as the lead in the upcoming biopic Madden. The movie follows the life of famous NFL coach and broadcaster John Madden. It is set to release in theaters on November 26, 2026. The film also features Christian Bale, John Mulaney, and Kathryn Hahn.

Cage praised Russell for showing class. He said he respected Russell’s talent. Because Russell was the only director who came back with a second chance, Cage accepted the role.

“David did call me, and it showed a lot of class that he would call me back and invite me again, and I didn’t want to say no to him again because I have great respect for his talent. And it was a beautiful experience.”

Cage described his version of Spider-Noir as a mix of classic movie stars. “It’s 70% Humphrey Bogart and 30% Bugs Bunny,” he said. The show places his character in 1930s New York. It is a darker, detective-style take on the superhero genre.
