The CBS show Tracker wrapped up its third season on May 24, 2026, and the finale left viewers with more questions than answers. The episode titled “The Best Ones” saw Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw and Jensen Ackles’ Russell Shaw team up one last time. While Colter believes he has finally solved the mystery of his father’s past, Russell is now carrying a dangerous secret that could destroy everything.
How Colter Shaw’s Final Rescue Mission Ends
The season 3 finale picks up right where the previous episode left off. Colter finds himself inside a secret lab where gifted children are being held as test subjects. He meets a teenage girl named Lola who has a unique ability called precognition, meaning she can see events before they happen.
Danny, a gifted boy trapped in the program, tells Colter he refuses to leave without Lola. Russell explains that the government has spent decades trying to understand precognition for military use. This explains why the secret program, known as Chrono Stasis, exists in the first place.
A scientist named Dr. Jukic, who turned against the program, helps Danny use remote viewing to find Lola’s location. They discover she has been taken to a power plant about 100 miles away as punishment. Colter heads out to rescue her and faces off against Vickers, a former Delta Force operative now working as a hired killer.
After a tense confrontation, Colter successfully gets Lola to safety. He then arranges for Lola, Danny, and Dr. Jukic to enter witness protection. Believing the case is closed, Colter finally allows himself to rest and feel at peace.
Russell Shaw’s Secret Deal Changes Everything
While Colter focuses on rescuing Lola, Russell finds himself in serious trouble. He meets with a military source who admits he was forced to give Russell up to the enemy. Armed guards ambush Russell and shoot him. He survives but keeps the bullet wound hidden from Colter.
Russell later confronts the man running the entire operation, a figure named McIntyre. Instead of killing Russell, McIntyre hands him a classified file about their father Ashton Shaw. The file contains disturbing information about something Ashton may have done to Colter when he was a child.
McIntyre then offers Russell a deal. If Russell handles one last job for the organization, the file will stay buried forever. Russell accepts the deal. Before leaving town, he calls Reenie (Fiona Rene) and asks her to keep Colter off his trail. He hints he will be gone for a while without telling Colter the real reason.
Fan Theories About What The Hidden File Contains
The finale never shows what is actually in the classified file. But Russell’s horrified reaction suggests the truth is deeply disturbing. Online, fans have started guessing that Colter may have been part of the Chrono Stasis experiments as a child.
Some viewers believe Ashton Shaw experimented on his own son. This could explain Colter’s unusually sharp instincts and survival skills throughout the series. The show has always hinted that Colter is different, and this theory would finally provide an answer.
The season ends with Colter repairing his father’s old truck. He believes the mystery surrounding Ashton is finally over. Meanwhile, Russell is now working with the Horizon Group again, carrying a file about Colter’s childhood that no one has told him about.
Cast Changes Continue To Shape The Show
The season 3 finale aired after the show went through several cast changes. Robin Weigert’s character Teddi was written off the show. Abby McEnany (Velma) and Eric Graise (Bobby) also left the series during season 3.
Executive producer Elwood Reid explained the changes to Us Weekly in May 2025. He said the show cannot “fall into complacency.” Reid noted that the only constant on the show is Hartley’s Colter Shaw character.
“The audience leans in because they’ve seen that character before. But I think they’re still thinking the central DNA of the show is Colter. With this guy, what makes him appealing is he is a mystery to himself,” Reid said.
Jensen Ackles returned as Russell Shaw for the finale after last appearing in October 2025. His comeback excited fans who had been waiting to see the Shaw brothers together again.

What Viewers Know That Colter Does Not
The biggest twist of the Tracker season 3 finale is that Colter has no idea about any of this. He heads home believing he has all the answers about his father. He thinks he can finally move on with his life and be at peace.
But the viewers know the truth is far from settled. Russell is now back working for the same people the brothers were fighting against. He is carrying a file about Colter’s childhood that remains unopened and unexplained. The show has set up a major conflict for season 4 that Colter does not even know is coming.
The finale did not deliver a clean, happy ending. Instead, it left space for something bigger. Colter believes the mystery is over. But the darker truth may still be waiting to surface when the show returns.
The episode aired on CBS at 9:00 p.m. ET. It is available for streaming on Paramount+.
