Netflix’s new sci-fi mystery The Boroughs has viewers talking about one thing: the strange glowing peach tree that Art finds in the desert caves. The show never fully explains what the tree is or where it came from. Now the creators are finally speaking up.

Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, who created The Boroughs, revealed in a recent interview that they had written scenes explaining the tree’s origins. Those scenes got cut from the final episodes. The writers decided to save those answers for later.
The tree appears only briefly in the series. Yet almost every horrible event in the story connects back to it. Art stumbles across the blooming tree while wandering through the desert. It carries glowing orange peaches and looks completely out of place in that world.
The Peach Tree Changes Everything for Art
When Art touches the fruit, the wound on his hand starts healing. A glittery substance from the peach does the magic. He takes a bite, and the show cuts away right before revealing more.
The next episode carries the title “Forbidden Fruit.” Art notices he can hear better. He no longer needs his hearing aid. His grey hair turns black. He feels stronger and moves like he is half his actual age. The show does not overexplain the transformation. Art himself looks stunned by what is happening to his body.
“It’s also a little nod to Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. We like trees and caves.” – Jeffrey Addiss, co-creator of The Boroughs
The fruit feels like a miracle. Until Art’s stomach starts twisting. In Episode 4, he doubles over in pain at a bar and collapses onto the bathroom floor. He cannot stand up properly. That is when Anneliese walks in and watches him carefully. She shows no concern at all.
A Direct Connection to Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
Addiss and Matthews previously worked on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance for Netflix. That show also featured caves, roots, living organisms, and ancient ecosystems. The peach tree in The Boroughs fits that same pattern.
The tree feels mythical. It could belong to some forgotten folklore. The presence of crows in the show also supports this idea. Whatever the tree represents clearly ties into the larger mystery of what lives beneath the Boroughs community.

What Happens When Art Takes Anneliese Back to the Cave
After Art ends up in the hospital, Anneliese sits near him. She immediately starts asking about the cave. She demands to know where he found the tree. She barely hides her obsession with it. Soon after, Art sees her real form for the first time. She looks pale, monstrous, and half-decayed.
This scene reveals that the fruit connects to whatever has been living under the Boroughs long before Mother entered the picture. But when Art takes Anneliese back to the cave, the tree is gone. Dead. No glowing peaches left behind.

The Boroughs premiered on Netflix on May 21, 2026. The show is available for streaming in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and India. All eight episodes dropped at once.
Horror writer Stephen King watched the entire season and shared his thoughts on Threads. He wrote:
“The Boroughs (Netflix): An absolute delight. Bonus: I believe, because it’s Netflix, you can watch all the episodes. It’s actually worth it.” – Stephen King
The series comes from the Duffer Brothers’ production company Upside Down Pictures. The show carries a similar feel to Stranger Things but with older characters facing supernatural threats in a retirement community in New Mexico.
The Cast and Where to Watch
The ensemble cast includes Alfred Molina as Sam Cooper, Geena Davis as Renee, Alfre Woodard as Judy, Clarke Peters as Art, Denis O’Hare as Wally, and Bill Pullman as Jack. Dee Wallace, known for her role in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, also appears in the opening episode.
The tree’s true purpose and its link to the glitch in the finale’s mirror reflection will likely be explored further. The creators have confirmed they know the full story and are waiting to share it in a possible second season.
