House of the Dragon is getting ready for its June 21 release on HBO and Max. The new season starts with a massive fight at sea called the Battle of the Gullet. But the show has more big moments lined up after that.

The series wrapped filming in May 2026 after starting production back in March at Leavesden Studios in Watford. Now the team is finishing post-production work to get the episodes ready for the summer premiere.

Four Major Battles Planned For The New Season

Showrunner Ryan Condal told Entertainment Weekly that Season 3 will bring four major events from George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood to the screen. These are not small fights. The show is making each one a full-scale production.

โ€œThere are, by my quick count on stage, four major events from the book that we get to adapt and realize in three dimensions in this season,โ€ Condal said. โ€œThatโ€˜s really exciting on a scope-and-scale perspective.โ€

Reports point to the Battle of the Honeywine, Butcherโ€™s Ball, and the First Battle of Tumbleton joining the Gullet as the seasonโ€˜s biggest moments. Each battle brings different types of action. Some focus on dragon fights. Others show ground troops clashing. The Gullet mixes both with ships and dragons together.

The Gullet Is Just The Beginning

The Battle of the Gullet happens early in Season 3. Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen, said the season โ€œstarts at 60 miles an hour.โ€ The war between Rhaenyra and Aegon has been building for two full seasons. Now it finally explodes.

Condal compared the Gullet to a famous movie battle to explain its size. โ€œTo try to tell this story without doing the Gullet would be trying to film Lord of the Rings without doing the Battle of Helm’s Deep,โ€ he said.

The fight involves the Velaryon fleet supporting Rhaenyra against the Triarchy fleet backing Aegon. Dragons fly above the ships. The production team built a large water tank that uses 1,000 liters of water per minute to film scenes on the water. Kevin de la Noy, who worked on Titanic, helped create the battle sequences.

Condal also called one episode โ€œarguably the craziest episode of television ever made.โ€ He did not say which episode, but the Gullet is the main candidate.

What The Cast Says About Season 3

The actors have been talking up the new season during press events. Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen, described the season as โ€œbigger, bolder, bloodier, more brutal, more dangerousโ€ during a panel at CCXP Mexico. He also promised more screen time for his dragon Caraxes.

Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hightower, talked about her characterโ€˜s relationship with Rhaenyra. โ€œTo hate someone, there has to be a passion that you have to set fire to,โ€ Cooke said. โ€œAnd I think there was a great love there once upon a time.โ€

Dโ€™Arcy shared how the cast reacted when they first read the Season 3 scripts. โ€œThere was a degree of thrill at what was on the page this season because the showโ€˜s gotten bigger, not just in terms of its dramatic scale, but actually in terms of its ambition,โ€ D’Arcy said.

The show is also adding new characters. Tommy Flanagan joins the cast as Ser Roderick Dustin, also called Roddy the Ruin. He leads a northern group called the Winter Wolves to fight for Rhaenyra.

Fans React To The Big News

Social media lit up after the latest teaser dropped. The 34-second clip showed Aemond Targaryen on the Iron Throne and multiple dragons flying over the sea. Rhaenyra says in the clip, โ€œHave you both betrayed your queen?!โ€ pointing to more twists inside her own team.

โ€œThe fire rises again! House of the Dragon Season 3 is going to be legendary.โ€ – Fan reaction on social media

โ€œI really hope this one is much better than Season 2. Let’s gooooo.โ€ – Viewer comment

Some fans had mixed feelings about Season 2. That season ended without a big battle and left many storylines hanging. Season 3 looks to fix that by putting the war front and center from episode one.

A teaser released earlier also showed Tessarion, the Blue Queen dragon, for the first time. This dragon belongs to Daeron Targaryen, Alicent’s youngest son who has not appeared on screen yet.

Release Details For Global Audiences

House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on June 21, 2026 on HBO in the United States. The show also streams on Max (formerly HBO Max) for US viewers.

For audiences in the UK, the show airs on Sky Atlantic and streams on NOW TV on the same day. Viewers in Canada can watch on Crave. Australian fans find the show on Binge and Foxtel. Indian audiences can stream it on JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. Other regions can check local HBO partners for availability.

The season will have eight episodes, following the pattern set by Season 2.
