Britney Spears is speaking out again on social media. The pop star shared several cryptic posts on May 29, calling out unnamed “mean girls” who laugh and point at her. She used her online nickname, River, to send a direct message to these critics.
“If you’re one of those mean girls pointing and laughing and looking at your phone in the audience just look up today… River sends you guys a message!!!!!!!!” Spears wrote on Instagram.
The post included a filtered throwback photo of a child raising their middle finger. Fans believe this was the “message” from River.
Spears Reflects on Changing Her Name to Escape Criticism
In another post shared the same day, Spears posted a video of herself dancing by a pool in a pink dress. She talked about a time she lived outside the United States.
“When I moved out of the country for a while I changed my name for some reason and the mean girls stopped laughing!!!!! Damn I miss it there,” she wrote.
Spears started using the pseudonyms River Red and Xila Maria River Red on her social media accounts back in 2023. Her recent posts suggest she used that name change to find peace away from public judgment.

The “Toxic” singer also shared a third post on May 26. She wrote about feeling awkward when there is “too much chatter” happening behind your back.
“When you get that awkward, weird feeling you can actually start to feel perhaps too much chatter is going on behind your back… it actually effects [sic] people… I still send them love but most importantly… I hope they feel my smile… the media has been a bit much in my opinion and I hope they can respect my unbelievable and miraculous spiritual journey.”
Spears said she is excited to embrace her journey. She asked the media to stop showing embarrassing things from her past.

These messages come two months after Spears faced legal trouble. On March 4, she was arrested in Ventura County, California, for driving under the influence. Police received an anonymous call about a car traveling at high speeds and swerving.
After her arrest, Spears checked into a treatment facility for 30 days. Her representative called the incident “completely inexcusable” at the time.
Spears accepted a plea deal on May 4. She pleaded guilty to reckless driving. Her sentence includes 12 months of probation and one day in jail, which was credited as time served. She must also pay a $571 fine, attend DUI classes, and see a psychologist once a week and a psychiatrist twice a month.
Unreleased Arrest Video Caused More Stress
Reports say Spears was “completely mortified” when nearly three hours of police video from her arrest surfaced online recently. The footage showed her struggling through a field sobriety test and making unusual comments to officers.
A source told Entertainment Tonight that Spears is trying to stay positive. “Recovery has been a difficult journey. She’s been working on rebuilding her relationship with her sons and is leaning on her support system,” the source said.
Spears shares two sons, Sean Preston (20) and Jayden James (19), with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. In late March, she posted a video spending time with them on a yacht.
