The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 is coming to AMC on July 26, 2026. The new season brings a major shift for Maggie and Negan. For the first time since Negan killed Glenn, the two characters will stop trying to kill each other and actually work together as true partners. A new showrunner takes over, and set photos suggest a beloved character from the original series might return.
Maggie and Negan Change Their Relationship Forever
The second season ended with Maggie holding Lucille, Neganโs barbed wire bat, ready to kill him after watching him murder Bruegel in the same way he killed Glenn. But she stopped after seeing Negan heartbroken over Ginnyโs death. Maggie chose to leave him alive.
Season three picks up almost right after that moment. But something different happens this time. Maggie asks Negan for help without trying to trick him or force him. She tells him, โWe need people. We need you.โ Negan answers, โNobody but me could keep this place safeโ.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan told Entertainment Weekly that the old dynamic is gone. He said:
โThatโs certainly going to be a new color for Dead Cityโs pair of protagonists.โ
Lauren Cohan also spoke about the change. She said Maggie is more open with Negan this season and no longer tries to control him.
Seth Hoffman Takes Over as Showrunner
Seth Hoffman joins The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 as the new showrunner. He replaces Eli Jornรฉ. Hoffman is not new to this world. He worked as a co-executive producer and writer on the original The Walking Dead series.
Hoffman wrote some of the most famous episodes from the main show, including โToo Far Gone,โ โNo Way Out,โ and โUs.โ He also helped run seasons four through six of the original series. Many fans consider those seasons the best of the entire franchise.
Hoffman shared that season three does not have a specific villain. He said:
โThere is no bad guy specific this season.โ
The challenge comes from watching Maggie and Negan try to build something together while their past still haunts them.
Emily Kinneyโs Beth Greene May Return in Season 3
Leaked set photos show Emily Kinney on the Dead City set with Lauren Cohan. Kinney played Beth Greene, Maggieโs younger sister, on The Walking Dead. Beth died in season five. Her death was one of the saddest moments of the whole show.
Beth never returned for any flashback scene before. The set photos suggest Kinney will reunite with Cohan in The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3. Fans have not gotten official confirmation from AMC yet. But the photos have spread widely across social media.
If true, this would mark Kinneyโs first time back in The Walking Dead universe since her characterโs death more than ten years ago.
Alternate Reality Episode Takes Place in a Zombie-Free New York
One episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 will show an alternate version of New York. In this version, there are no walkers. The city looks clean and normal. Negan will be seen wearing an ankle monitor in this episode.
The episode shows how the characters live without the constant threat of zombies around them. It is a different kind of story for the franchise. Not much else is known about this episode yet. But it will be a break from the usual post-apocalyptic setting of the show.
Aimee Garcia Joins the Cast from Lucifer
Aimee Garcia has joined the cast of The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3. Garcia played Ella Lopez on Lucifer for five seasons. She is known for her energetic and kind character on that show.
Garcia will play a new character created for season three. Details about her role are still under wraps. But her casting adds another familiar face to the growing list of actors in The Walking Dead universe.
Other returning cast members include Jimmi Simpson, Raรบl Castillo, Logan Kim, and Michael Emery. Gaius Charles also returns as Perlie Armstrong, a marshal from New Babylon who has his own complicated history with both Maggie and Negan.
What Happened at the End of Season 2
The second season ended with Maggieโs son Hershel choosing to stay with The Dama instead of going home with his mother. The Dama is a powerful leader in Manhattan. She has a mysterious hold over the boy. Maggie could not convince him to leave.
Negan also lost Ginny, the young girl he protected. She turned into a walker. Her death broke Negan in a way that reminded Maggie of how he fell apart after his first wife died. Seeing that pain is what made Maggie stop trying to kill him.
