Marshals Season 2 Episode 2, titled “End of Watch,” aired on CBS on October 11, 2026, and delivered a tense, personal hour that put Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) in the crosshairs of a killer while forcing him to confront the fear that he is turning into his late father, John Dutton. The episode also revealed a major health crisis for Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) and gave Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) a key moment with Kayce.
The episode opened with a sniper shooting a man near Butte Reservoir. The killer turned out to be Wayne Plummer, a former SWAT officer with a long list of grudges against the people he believed ruined his career. As the Marshals raced to stop him, Belle Skinner (Arielle Kebbel) discovered a pressure-triggered bomb at Plummer’s home, and Kayce guided her to safety.
Wayne Plummer’s Revenge Plan and the Son He Pulled In
Wayne Plummer targeted former colleagues one by one, including Chief Deputy Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen). Gifford survived a shot thanks to his vest, but the case took a darker turn when Plummer brought his own son into the violence. The younger Plummer helped his father in the ambush, and the Marshals suddenly had to handle a family tragedy in real time.
Kayce and Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos) eventually took down Wayne Plummer. Kayce then talked the killer’s son out of going further down the same path. The moment hit hard because Kayce understood exactly what it meant to grow up under a father’s shadow and to feel pulled toward violence as a way of life.
Later, Cal confronted Gifford about why he had kept his connection to Plummer secret. Gifford admitted he had denied Plummer’s son a spot at the police academy partly because he did not trust Kayce. He told Cal he used to believe “the poison apple doesn’t fall far from the poison tree,” but that watching Kayce work as a Marshal had changed his mind.
Kayce’s Real Fear: Tate Becoming Like John Dutton
The case served as a mirror for Kayce’s personal struggle. After rescuing Tate (Brecken Merrill) from Tom Weaver in the season premiere, Kayce became overprotective. He installed a high-tech surveillance system around East Camp, and when Andrea asked if he was building a fortress, Kayce said he was doing whatever it took to keep Tate safe.
Kayce’s worry is not just about physical danger. He sees Tate looking up to John Dutton as a hero, and he fears his son will inherit the same violent legacy. Kayce told someone in the episode, “No Dutton man should become his father.” Thomas Rainwater responded with a blunt and important line: “I knew your father; you’re not him”.
That exchange gave the episode its emotional center. Kayce has spent years carrying the weight of the Dutton name, and Rainwater’s words suggested that the cycle might not be unbreakable after all.
Cal Calvin Tells the Team About His Cancer
Cal Calvin used the episode to share a personal crisis with his colleagues. He told them he has a rare form of lung cancer and will need chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. His daughter Maddie (Morgan Lindholm) still does not know.
The choice to tell his coworkers before his own daughter added a layer of realism to Cal’s character. Telling the team meant explaining how his illness could affect their shared work. Telling Maddie meant facing her fear and the chance that she would see him differently. Cal’s leadership has always depended on being the person who knows what to do next, and his illness challenged that role directly.
Fans React to the Episode’s Father-Son Theme
Viewers and critics responded strongly to the episode’s focus on family trauma. TV Fanatic called “End of Watch” “another excellent episode of Marshals” and praised its exploration of what family trauma can do when someone does not actively try to stop the cycle.
The review also noted that Kayce is running out of time to reach Tate. With Tate’s 18th birthday approaching, Kayce’s window to guide his son away from the Dutton legacy is closing fast.
SlashFilm pointed out that the episode “once again suggests ‘Marshals’ is actually interested in Kayce Dutton’s son, but whether this will go anywhere remains to be seen”. The show is clearly building something around Tate, even if the full payoff has not arrived yet.
