Jason Momoa is no longer attached to star in the Helldivers movie. The actor has left the Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions adaptation of the popular video game franchise. Director Justin Lin remains on board, but Sony must now find a new lead actor. The film still has a release date of November 10, 2027. The reason for Momoa’s departure has not been made public.
Momoa’s Exit Shakes Up the Project
Momoa joined the Helldivers movie in February 2026. His casting brought major attention to the project. He was set to play the lead role in the sci-fi action film. The actor had been building a strong connection to video game movies. He starred in the 2025 Minecraft film, which earned $960 million worldwide. He also appears in the upcoming Street Fighter adaptation. Helldivers would have been his third video game movie in three years.
But now that is not happening. Sources confirm that Momoa is out. Neither Sony nor Momoa’s representatives have given a reason for the exit. The departure comes as a surprise to many in Hollywood.
Sony Moves Fast to Find Replacement
The Helldivers movie is still happening. Sony is already looking for a new star to fill the lead role. The studio has a November 2027 release date to hit. That gives them time to recast and finish production. But they need to act quickly to keep the schedule on track.
Justin Lin is still directing the film. Lin is best known for his work on the Fast and Furious franchise. He also directed Star Trek Beyond. Lin is not a gamer. What Is Helldivers About
The Helldivers movie is based on the video game from Arrowhead Game Studios. The first Helldivers game came out in 2015. It is a cooperative twin-stick shooter. Players join an elite unit called the Helldivers. Their mission is to protect a fictional planet called Super Earth and defeat alien threats in an intergalactic war. The game has a satirical tone similar to Starship Troopers. It mixes intense action with dark humor about military propaganda.
Helldivers 2 launched in February 2024. It became a massive hit. The sequel sold more than 12 million units on PlayStation 5 and PC in its first four months. It is the fastest-selling PlayStation game of all time. It beat records set by God of War Ragnarok and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The game has since expanded to Xbox and continues to perform well.
