VisionQuest is just days away from its Disney+ debut, and showrunner Terry Matalas has finally settled the debate about whether viewers need to do their Marvel “homework” before tuning in. The upcoming series brings back Paul Bettany as the rebuilt android hero, and with it being the final chapter of the WandaVision trilogy, many fans have wondered if they need to revisit the previous shows first. Matalas, who also serves as showrunner, producer, and director on the project, has given a clear and simple answer that should ease the minds of both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Terry Matalas Says WandaVision Is Not Mandatory Viewing

Speaking with Polygon ahead of the series premiere, Terry Matalas was asked directly whether viewers need to watch WandaVision before starting VisionQuest. His response was straightforward and reassuring.

“We definitely catch the audience up very simply. So it’s not a hard and fast rule that they need to watch,” Matalas explained. However, the showrunner did recommend watching WandaVision if viewers have the time, as VisionQuest is directly connected to the events of that series.

Matalas also addressed the connection to Agatha All Along, the second entry in the trilogy. He noted that while elements of the Agatha series are touched upon in VisionQuest, viewers can still easily grasp what is happening without having watched it.

For those who want the fullest experience, Matalas suggested that watching Avengers: Age of Ultron would make the new series “more rewarding to know who Ultron and Vision are.”

The Two Marvel Scenes That Inspired the Show

Matalas has been open about the creative foundation of VisionQuest, revealing that two specific scenes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe served as the basis for the entire series.

The first is the final scene between Vision and the last Ultron drone in Avengers: Age of Ultron. In that moment, the two artificial beings discuss the nature of humanity, with Ultron branding Vision “naive” before Vision obliterates him. Matalas called this “one of my favorite scenes in all of Marvel canon.”

The second is the “Ship of Theseus” scene from WandaVision, where two versions of Vision — the Hex-created Vision and the rebuilt White Vision — debate which one is the true version of themselves. The philosophical question at the heart of that scene: if every part of a ship is replaced over time, is it still the same ship?

Matalas explained how these two scenes shaped the new series: “That was the basis of the series.”

What Happened to White Vision

For viewers who need a quick refresher, the VisionQuest story picks up from where WandaVision left off. At the end of the 2021 series, White Vision — the rebuilt body of the original android, reactivated by S.W.O.R.D. — received the original Vision’s memories after a confrontation with the Hex-created Vision. He then flew off to an unknown destination.

The new series follows White Vision as he deals with a major disconnect: he has all of Vision’s memories, but he does not have an emotional connection to them. Paul Bettany returns to play this version of the character, who is searching for identity and purpose.

The official description of VisionQuest reads: “Vision, rebooted and having escaped from those who sought to weaponize him, has been in hiding. Searching for new meaning, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including Friday, Edith, Jarvis, and the infamous Ultron. His discreet existence ends when a bounty placed on his head thrusts him on the run with Thomas Shepard, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son, reincarnate.”

Where VisionQuest Fits in the MCU Timeline

Matalas has also clarified exactly when VisionQuest takes place in the larger MCU timeline. The series does not pick up immediately after WandaVision. Instead, several years have passed.

“Years have passed since WandaVision. I would say we’re about current with Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” Matalas told Polygon.

This time jump puts VisionQuest roughly four years after the events of WandaVision, placing it around the same period as the upcoming Spider-Man film. The gap also allows the story to move beyond the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Agatha All Along.

The Cast of VisionQuest

Paul Bettany returns as the lead, playing the rebuilt White Vision. James Spader is also back as Ultron, reprising his role from the 2015 film Avengers: Age of Ultron. Notably, Ultron appears in a human form in the series, which Matalas explained was a deliberate choice centered on Spader’s acting abilities. “It’s a James Spader thing. I love James Spader,” Matalas said. “It is prohibitively expensive to do a CGI robot 24/7, but I also don’t want to see a CGI robot. It’s not going to be able to emote and do the things that James Spader can do with just the twitch of an eyebrow.”

The cast also includes Ruaridh Mollica as Thomas Shepherd, a mysterious young boy who may be Vision’s son. Todd Stashwick plays Paladin, a bounty hunter pursuing Vision. Other cast members include Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, James D’Arcy, Emily Hampshire, T’Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, and Diane Morgan.

Marvel Gives Fans a Head Start

Marvel Entertainment has released the first three episodes of WandaVision on its official YouTube channel, allowing those without a Disney+ subscription to catch up before VisionQuest arrives. The full episodes were uploaded one at a time, giving viewers free access to the beginning of the story that leads directly into the new series.

What Fans Are Saying

The VisionQuest trailer, which premiered in August 2026, sparked plenty of conversation online, particularly around James Spader’s human form as Ultron.
