A wild new fan theory is making rounds across the Marvel fandom. It suggests that Doctor Doom’s main target in Avengers: Doomsday is not his usual comic book nemesis Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), but rather Chris EvansSteve Rogers (Captain America). This idea connects directly back to Avengers: Endgame, specifically the emotional ending where old Steve Rogers appeared on a bench after going back in time to live with Peggy Carter.

The internet has been buzzing since the first teasers for Avengers: Doomsday started dropping. While Marvel has confirmed a massive cast list including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Robert Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom, the plot remains mostly under wraps. This theory claims that Cap’s “happily ever after” might have accidentally destroyed Doom’s home universe, turning the iconic villain into a vengeful force determined to make Steve pay.

How Captain America’s Endgame Ending Created a Supervillain

At the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Steve Rogers travels back in time to return the Infinity Stones. He decides to stay in the past with Peggy Carter, living a full life before returning as an old man to pass the shield to Sam Wilson. For five years, fans debated whether this created an alternate timeline or if he was simply hiding in the main timeline.

Joe and Anthony Russo (the directors of Endgame) argued that Steve created an alternate reality. However, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (the writers) insisted that Steve was always part of the main timeline, existing as a background figure while his younger self was frozen in ice.

The new Avengers: Doomsday theory uses this disagreement as fuel. It suggests that Cap’s decision to alter history did create a branching timeline. This specific timeline eventually collided with another universe (known as an Incursion), which resulted in the total destruction of Victor Von Doom‘s world and the death of his family.

If this theory holds up, Doom would be a villain with a very logical motive. He is not trying to rule the world just for power. He wants revenge on the man whose selfish decision to reclaim a lost love doomed billions of innocent lives, including Doom’s wife and children.

A Leaked Coffee Menu and the ‘Cynthia’ Clue

Marvel Studios recently set up a pop-up coffee shop in London named Dom Latveria Coffee to promote the film. The menu featured drinks named after deep-cut references from Doom’s comic book history. Items included “Fortunov,” “Zefiro,” and “Cynthia’s Blend.”

Comic book fans immediately recognized Cynthia as Cynthia Von Doom, Victor’s mother. In the comics, her soul is trapped in Hell by the demon Mephisto (played in the MCU by Sacha Baron Cohen). The inclusion of her name on the menu strongly suggests that her imprisonment is a major part of Doom’s backstory in the film.

However, the theory connecting these dots is that Cynthia is not the only loved one Doom lost. If an Incursion destroyed his universe, he likely lost a wife (potentially a version of Sue Storm) and children as well. This ties back to a piece of leaked concept art from February 2026 that showed Doom sitting on a throne with Sue and her son Franklin Richards by his side.

The Mind-Bending Timeline Clues in the Trailers

The trailers for Avengers: Doomsday have been hiding strange number sequences. Fans noticed that each teaser ends with a time code that matches specific scenes in Avengers: Endgame. These timestamps point to moments where the Avengers messed with the space-time continuum.

One code points to the scene where the Ancient One explains to Bruce Banner that removing Infinity Stones creates branching timelines. Another points to Loki escaping with the Tesseract, and a third points to the planning of the Time Heist. The theory argues that these aren’t coincidences. The Russo Brothers are telling the audience to go back and watch Endgame because the consequences of that movie are directly causing the disaster in Doomsday.

This theory suggests that Doomsday will reveal that the Avengers’ “Time Heist” splintered the multiverse so badly that it caught the attention of Kang the Conqueror (or in this case, Doctor Doom). Doom is now trying to prune these dangerous timelines to save reality, but he believes the root of the infection is Steve Rogers.

Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. Face Off

Both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are confirmed to appear in the film. At CinemaCon 2026, Evans addressed his return, stating, “I said I would only come back for a real reason, and in Doomsday, there is a very real reason that these superheroes need Steve Rogers. I love you, Downey, but this guy (Doom), I don’t like him.”

Downey Jr. also spoke about his new character, telling the audience, “I couldn’t have imagined reuniting with this amazing team—let alone as a new character. What I want to do is give away, like, 37,000 spoilers right now. Should I, just for fun?” He described Doctor Doom as “wildly epic, to say the least.”

If the theory is true, their reunion on screen will be very different from the brotherly bond of Civil War and Endgame. This time, Tony Stark’s face will be staring at Steve with pure hatred, blaming him for destroying his family.
