The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer has Marvel fans asking one big question: What is happening to Peter Parker? The upcoming film shows Tom Holland’s character going through a serious physical change, and many viewers believe the Venom symbiote is behind it all.

Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home. Peter lives alone after Doctor Strange’s spell erased him from everyone’s memory. He spends his time protecting New York City as Spider-Man. But his powers start to change in ways he does not expect.

The trailer shows Peter with black eyes, the ability to shoot webs without his mechanical web-shooters, and extreme aggression. He says, “What is happening to me? I am losing my mind. I am totally out of control. I got to fix whatever this is right now.”

Why Fans Think Venom Is Causing Peter’s Transformation

The connection to Venom starts with a small detail from No Way Home. The post-credits scene showed Eddie Brock leaving behind a piece of the Venom symbiote. Marvel never addressed this leftover piece, but fans think Brand New Day will finally pay off that tease.

The symbiote fragment could find an isolated Peter Parker and feed on his trauma. In the comics, the symbiote corrupts Peter by amplifying his darker emotions. Many fans connect Peter’s black eyes in the trailer to the symbiote left behind in No Way Home.

The trailer also gives other clues. Peter wears mostly black clothing and acts more sullen than before. His personality change looks a lot like what happened in Spider-Man 3 when the symbiote made Tobey Maguire’s Peter more aggressive and arrogant.

At the 1:16 mark in the trailer, Peter’s left hand appears completely black while his right hand looks normal. Some viewers believe this is a shadow, but others think it shows the symbiote spreading through his body.

The Comic Book History Behind the Theory

The comics give strong support to this theory. In The Amazing Spider-Man #252, Peter first gets the black suit during the Secret Wars storyline. He thinks it is an advanced costume and does not know it is an alien symbiote. The suit slowly increases his strength, aggression, and stamina before showing its true nature.

After Peter rejects the symbiote, it bonds with reporter Eddie Brock to become the villain Venom. The MCU is setting up Avengers: Secret Wars, which makes this comic connection even more meaningful.

The trailer also shows an X-ray of Peter’s body with black spots spreading through him. The screen reads “Enhanced human detected.” Some fans see black webbing patterns in the scan, which could show the symbiote infecting him.

Signs of Symbiote Infection in the Trailer

Peter shows strange sensitivity to sound in the trailer. At one point, a falling water droplet makes him clutch his head in pain. The X-ray scan also found “heightened senses.”

Sound has always been Venom’s weakness. In Spider-Man 3 and the Venom movies, high-frequency sounds weaken the symbiote and can separate it from its host. Peter’s new sound sensitivity reminds many viewers of Venom’s known weakness.

Peter develops organic webbing in the trailer and no longer needs his web-shooters. This matches what happens in the comics when Peter first bonds with the symbiote. The symbiote mimics the web-shooters and creates organic webs.

The way Peter catches himself while falling also matches Venom’s signature hand gesture from the comics. At one point, he dangles from one arm with his hand balled into a fist, which looks like the pose Venom makes when shooting webs.

What the Movie Is About

The official description says Peter has become a full-time Spider-Man after four years of living alone. The pressure of protecting New York triggers a physical evolution that threatens his existence. He also faces a strange new pattern of crimes that brings one of his most powerful enemies.

Bruce Banner appears in the trailer, warning Peter about his mutating DNA. Mark Ruffalo returns as Banner, suggesting Peter seeks help from the smartest minds in the MCU.

The cast includes Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, and Michael Mando. Sadie Sink joins the franchise in a role that has not been fully revealed.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases in the United States on July 31, 2026. The film comes five years after No Way Home and serves as a soft reboot for the character.
