The search for the next James Bond is officially underway, and the woman who helped cast the last three actors to play 007 has a very clear idea of what the new star needs. Debbie McWilliams spent 40 years as the casting director for the Bond franchise, working on 13 films from For Your Eyes Only to No Time to Die. She was responsible for choosing Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig. Now that she has retired, she is sharing her expert opinion on what it takes to be the next Bond.

According to McWilliams, there is one quality that is absolutely necessary for the next actor to step into the iconic role. While many fans and media outlets have been suggesting famous names, her advice points in a completely different direction.

McWilliams Says Bond Actor Must Be a ‘Total Enigma’

McWilliams says that the next James Bond must be a “total enigma.” In a recent interview, she explained that the actor needs to be someone the public knows very little about. “It is absolutely essential that he retains a total enigma,” she stated. This is not just about keeping a mystery for the sake of it. For her, it is a core part of the character’s identity.

“We want to know as little about them personally as possible, because that’s what spies are. We don’t need to know where he goes shopping or who his parents are, or where he lives. We never want to see him at home.”

This idea of mystery directly connects to Bond’s job. “He’s licensed to kill, and we have to believe that he can do that. If you don’t, then you’ve lost the audience,” McWilliams added. If the audience knows too much about the actor’s personal life, it becomes harder to see him as a dangerous and secretive spy.

Popular Frontrunners Don’t Fit Her Vision

This strong belief in keeping the actor a mystery means that many of the currently popular names being discussed for the role are not good choices in her eyes. Actors like Callum Turner, Harris Dickinson, and Jacob Elordi are among the betting favorites, but McWilliams has rejected the idea of any of them becoming Bond.

“I don’t want to see any of them as James Bond because we now know so much about them,” she said bluntly. Her reason is clear: these actors are too famous. Turner’s marriage to pop star Dua Lipa and Elordi’s high-profile relationships keep them constantly in the tabloids. This level of fame, she argues, destroys the necessary mystery.

McWilliams says that history supports this approach. When she cast Dalton, Brosnan, and Craig, none were massive stars. “Timothy and Pierce weren’t particularly well known,” she recalled. “Daniel had had a career in independent filmsโ€ฆ but he wasn’t a household name, and that helps enormously.” She is looking for someone completely new and unexpected.

Daniel Craig Casting Shows Why Unknown Actors Work Best

McWilliams points to the casting of Daniel Craig as the perfect example of why an unknown actor works best. When he was chosen to play Bond in 2006’s Casino Royale, it was not a popular decision. In fact, it was met with huge backlash.

“He was such an unpopular choice,” McWilliams remembered. “Nobody supported it. Not the studio. Not the director.” She even described the press conference announcing him as “completely disastrous.” But Craig used that negativity as fuel. McWilliams shared her theory on this:

“He thought, ‘I’m going to show you bastards,’ and he did. And everybody went, ‘Oh my god, isn’t he wonderful?’ So don’t ask the people who they want, because they won’t know.”

This story shows why McWilliams is against the idea of public voting. When Amazon first took over the franchise, Jeff Bezos asked fans on social media who should be the next Bond. McWilliams dismissed this idea entirely, saying, “That’s not how you cast a film, Jeff!”

New Team Now Leading the James Bond Casting Search

While Debbie McWilliams has retired, the actual search for the new Bond is now being led by a new team. Amazon MGM Studios has taken full creative control of the franchise. The new film, often called James Bond 26, has a powerful team attached. Denis Villeneuve (Dune) is set to direct, Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) will write the script, and the casting process is being handled by top casting director Nina Gold.

Second-round auditions are reported to be taking place in August 2026. The new team is looking for an actor who is believed to be young enough to lead a series of films for the next decade or more. While McWilliams is no longer involved, her decades of experience offer a clear guide for what has historically made the character work.

In the end, McWilliams’s advice for the new casting team is simple: find someone fresh. “I want to see somebody who is completely out of the blue,” she says. For her, that element of surprise is what can make the next James Bond a success.
