How Phil and Amy Mickelson First Met

Phil and Amy’s story began in 1992 at Arizona State University. At the time, Phil was a senior golfer, and Amy was a junior who also had a role as a cheerleader for the Phoenix Suns NBA team. In Phil’s 2007 book, One Magical Sunday: (But Winning Isn’t Everything), Amy shared that she didn’t know much about his golf career when they first met. She thought he might be someone who “worked in the shop at a golf course” rather than a professional player. They went on their first date at a tennis court. They married on November 16, 1996, and have been together ever since.

A History Filled with Family and Health Battles

Amy and Phil have three children together: daughters Amanda (born 1999), Sophia (born 2001), and son Evan (born 2003). Their family faced serious hardships, including the difficult birth of their son Evan, where both Amy and the baby were in danger. Phil later shared that Evan didn’t breathe for seven minutes and that they were close to losing Amy during the delivery.

The biggest challenge came in 2009 when Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 37. Phil took a break from his golf schedule to support her through major surgery and treatment. Less than two months after Amy’s diagnosis, Phil’s mother, Mary, was also diagnosed with breast cancer. The support Amy received from Phil and her successful fight against cancer became a well-known story in the sports world, especially when Phil won the Masters in 2010 with Amy watching.

In 2004, the couple founded the Birdies for the Brave charity to support military families, along with their own foundation focused on youth and family initiatives.

Amy’s Loyalty During Recent Controversies

Amy has remained a steady presence during Phil’s professional controversies. She supported him as he faced criticism and was suspended from the PGA Tour for joining LIV Golf in 2022. He also spoke about how his wife supported him through his gambling addiction, which he described as “reckless and embarrassing.” In a 2023 Instagram post, he credited Amy for loving him through his “darkest and most difficult times.”

The Recent Misconduct Allegations and Amy’s Support

The latest attention on their marriage comes from a report on the golf website Skratch, which detailed allegations from Ashley Perez, the ex-wife of golfer Pat Perez. Perez claims that during the 2015 Barclays tournament, Mickelson showed her an explicit photo of himself and asked her to visit his bedroom after her husband had gone to sleep. This adds to other recent accusations, including a reported incident at The Farms Golf Club where he allegedly made inappropriate physical contact with a female employee.

Amid these claims, Phil’s spokesperson has confirmed that Amy is standing by him. In a statement to PEOPLE on June 29, 2026, the spokesperson said Amy is supporting him “with extraordinary grace” and “unwavering love.” The statement also addressed the allegations, saying, “Some of the allegations circulating about Mr. Mickelson are false, and others revisit mistakes he has already acknowledged, publicly or privately.” The representative added that Phil is currently focused on a “private family health matter” and wants to “become the husband, father, and man his family deserves.”
