The new crime thriller I Will Find You has taken over Netflix in a big way. The eight-episode series, based on Harlan Coben’s 2023 novel, arrived on the streaming platform on June 18, 2026 and quickly became the most-watched original series premiere of the year. Within its first full week, the show pulled in 34 million views, making it the top English TV title from June 22 to 28. The series had already scored 24 million views during its opening weekend, which was already a record for Netflix originals in 2026.

The show stars Sam Worthington, known for his role in the Avatar movies, as David Burroughs. David is a father serving a life sentence for the murder of his three-year-old son, Matthewโ€”a crime he did not commit. Five years into his prison term, his former sister-in-law Rachel Mills, played by Britt Lower from Severance, shows up with a photograph that changes everything. The picture shows Matthew alive at an amusement park. This revelation pushes David to break out of prison and go on a desperate mission to find his son and clear his name.

Sam Worthington Leads a Strong Cast in the Netflix Thriller

The cast of I Will Find You brings together several well-known actors. Alongside Worthington and Lower, Milo Ventimiglia from This Is Us plays Hayden, Rachel’s ex-boyfriend who stays a close friend and helps in the search. Logan Browning from Dear White People plays Sarah Greer, an FBI agent leading the task force hunting David. Erin Richards plays Cheryl Dreason, David’s ex-wife who believes her son was murdered by her former husband. Chi McBride plays Agent Max Williams, and Madeleine Stowe plays Gertrude Payne, a wealthy heiress with dark secrets.

Harlan Coben, who also serves as an executive producer, called the cast a dream team. Showrunner and creator Robert Hull said working with this group made the series better than he could have hoped for. The series was adapted by Hull from Coben’s novel, with Coben’s company Final Twist Productions involved in production.

What Is I Will Find You About?

The story starts in a dark place. David Burroughs has spent five years in prison for a crime he knows he did not commit. His son Matthew was found dead in his bed, beaten beyond recognition. DNA seemed to prove the body was Matthew’s, and a baseball bat belonging to David was found buried nearby. A neighbor testified that she saw David bury it. David’s wife Cheryl left him and remarried, convinced of his guilt.

But when Rachel visits David in prison with a photo showing Matthew alive, everything changes. David recognizes his son’s facial birthmark immediately. For David, this news wakes him up from years of giving up. As Sam Worthington explained, “The story is about a dad who’s accused of murdering his son and then finds out that he’s alive. So he sets out on finding the truth”.

David escapes from prison and goes on the run, with Rachel and Hayden helping him uncover what really happened. Along the way, they must avoid a determined FBI task force led by Agents Max Williams and Sarah Greer. The investigation leads them to wealthy heiress Gertrude Payne and mobster Nicky Fisher, but the truth turns out to be much closer to home.

Critics and Fans Have Mixed Reactions

I Will Find You has sparked strong opinions on both sides. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show holds a 62% Tomatometer score from 29 critic reviews, while the audience score sits at 66% from over 100 ratings. These numbers show a clear gap between the show’s massive viewership and how people actually feel about it.

Some critics have praised the series. Peter Travers of The Travers Take gave it 3 out of 4 stars, noting that “even when the new Harlan Coben suspense series goes off the rails, the thrills keep coming”. James Jackson of The Times gave it 3 out of 5 stars, though he described the show as feeling “merely clinically efficient” despite its absurd plot.

Audience reactions are just as divided. One viewer called it “the best mystery show I’ve ever seen” and praised the writing. Another described it as having “incredibly dull acting” with “awful dialogues” and “unbelievably stupid” plotting. One fan who binge-watched the entire season in one sitting wrote: “This show completely took over my life from the moment I pressed play”. Another viewer admitted: “Are there plot holes? Sure – it’s a made for Netflix soap opera type of show. But the acting is solid, the story is solid, and the plot kept me interested to binge the whole season”.

Not everyone was impressed. One critic warned: “Unless you are prepared to COMPLETELY suspend belief of even the most normal, basic expectations of realism, give this a miss”. They added: “The ridiculous scenarios you’re expected to swallow had me turning it off 10 minutes into episode 2”.

The Ending Reveals a Shocking Truth

The finale of I Will Find You brings all the twists to a head. David, Cheryl, and Rachel discover that Matthew is indeed alive. But the person behind his disappearance is not a mob boss or a disgraced doctor. It is Hayden, Rachel’s ex-boyfriend who had been pretending to help them all along.

Hayden had spent years developing an obsession with Rachel after their relationship ended. He bribed a fertility clinic owned by his family to use his DNA to father a child with Rachel’s eggs, creating Matthew without her knowledge. When David was convicted for Matthew’s murder, Hayden and his wealthy mother Gertrude kept the boy hidden.

In the final confrontation, Agent Greer, who has gathered enough evidence to believe David is innocent, agrees to pursue Matthew at the Payne estate. David convinces her to let him join the rescue mission. A gunfight breaks out, resulting in the deaths of Hayden and Gertrude, and David is shot in the stomach. The series ends at David’s father’s funeral, where David insists he would always find his way back to his son, no matter what.

A Standalone Miniseries

For those who loved the show, there is some disappointment. I Will Find You is a standalone miniseries, meaning there will not be a second season. This follows the pattern of most of Coben’s other Netflix adaptations, which are designed as limited series with a complete story.

The series continues Harlan Coben’s successful partnership with Netflix. Previous adaptations include Fool Me Once, which starred Michelle Keegan and was a hit in 2024. Coben’s other Netflix shows include The Stranger, Stay Close, and Safe.

I Will Find You is available to stream now on Netflix in all regions, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India. All eight episodes dropped on the same day, making it easy for viewers to binge the entire series.
