House of the Dragon Season 3 has taken a sharp turn from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood with its handling of the Battle of Tumbleton. Episode 3, which aired on July 5, 2026, introduced the battle but kept it entirely off-screen. This decision marks one of the biggest changes the show has made to the source material so far.
The show’s version of the event is dramatically different from the book. In Fire & Blood, Tumbleton is the site of a massive, bloody battle that plays a crucial role in the Dance of the Dragons. On the show, it is presented more as a swift military raid. The Greens simply storm the city and take control without a major on-screen fight.
How the Show’s Tumbleton Differs from Fire & Blood
The differences between the book and the show are significant. In the source material, the First Battle of Tumbleton happens much later in the timeline, after the death of Ser Criston Cole. It involves a large Green force led by Ormund Hightower attacking the Northern Winter Wolves and their riverlord allies stationed in the town.
The battle in the book is a fierce, drawn-out conflict. Rhaenyra’s forces fight bravely and appear to be winning until Daeron Targaryen arrives on his dragon, Tessarion, and turns the tide. Daeron’s presence in the battle is a major turning point.
The show has completely reworked this sequence. Episode 3 shows Ormund Hightower kneeling in surrender to Daemon Targaryen. He hands over a boy presented as Daeron. Rhaenyra decides to send the boy to the Night’s Watch. However, this is all a deception. The real Daeron is never captured. The boy is a fake, someone with bleached hair forced into silence.
While Rhaenyra believes she has secured a victory, the Hightower forces are actually taking Tumbleton. The episode ends with a dragonkeeper delivering the news to Rhaenyra: “The Hightower host has taken Tumbleton. They have infiltrated its streets. Its people are hostages”.
Another key difference is Daeron’s first battle. In the show, his first real fight involves allowing a double to take his place at King’s Landing. In Fire & Blood, Daeron first fights at the Battle of the Honeywine, where his dragon turns a potential defeat into a Green victory. The show removed that event entirely.
Why Tumbleton Matters in the War
Tumbleton is not just another town in Westeros. Its location gives it major strategic importance. The market town sits near the head of the Mander River in the Reach, about 150 miles southwest of King’s Landing. It is the last major settlement between the Hightower army and the capital.
Controlling Tumbleton means controlling a key approach to King’s Landing. The town is also the seat of House Footly and serves as a major trade post. Its resources and population make it valuable for any army trying to hold the capital.
The show has added a personal stake for one character. Hugh Hammer has a wife named Kat who moved to Tumbleton to live with her brother. This connection makes the town’s fall more personal for him and could affect his choices in future episodes.
Episode 4 Promo Teases More Action at Tumbleton
The preview for Episode 4 confirms that the battle for Tumbleton will take center stage. The teaser shows Rhaenyra asking, “Why seize Tumbleton?” while also showing the Hightower army preparing for conflict.
Ormund Hightower appears to burn someone alive in the promo, hinting at the violence to come. The show seems to be setting up the town as a major location for the rest of the season. Episode 4 is scheduled to air on July 12, 2026, on HBO and Max.
The season consists of eight episodes, with the finale scheduled for August 9, 2026. Fans can expect more developments at Tumbleton as the season progresses.
The Brutal Sack of Tumbleton
One detail the show has kept from the books is the brutality of the attack. The dragonkeeper who reports the fall of Tumbleton tells Rhaenyra that the Greens “infiltrated” the city and made its people “hostages”.
In Fire & Blood, the sack of Tumbleton is described as exceptionally cruel. The book states that “seldom has any town or city in the history of the Seven Kingdoms been subject to as long or as cruel or as savage a sack”.
The show has not yet shown the full extent of the violence. However, the language used by the dragonkeeper suggests a similar level of brutality is coming. The town’s capture is portrayed as a devastating event for the people living there.

Setting Up Future Events
The changes to the Battle of Tumbleton may be setting up even bigger events later in the season. In the books, the battle takes a shocking turn when two major Black supporters betray their side and help the Greens.
