Bollywood actor Disha Patani is preparing for her first Hollywood film. She will appear in ‘Holiguards Saga – The Portal of Force’ , a supernatural action thriller directed by Kevin Spacey. The movie marks Spacey’s return to directing after more than twenty years. In a recent interview with Variety India, Patani shared her experience working with the Oscar-winning actor and explained what it takes for Indian actors to break into the Western film industry.
Disha Patani Praises Kevin Spacey’s Directing Style
Patani described Spacey as a director who gives actors freedom to try new things. She told Variety India, “He is amazing. Being an actor, he understands his actors. He is one of the finest actors in the world. He gives his actors a lot of space to experiment”.
The actor explained how Spacey worked with the cast every morning. He would sit with them and go through each scene. He asked questions like “How would you react to a situation like this?” “Would you cry?” “What would you feel?” and “How would you emote?”.
“Every morning, he would sit with us and take us through the scene. I found that really special. I don’t think I had done that with any of the creators in the past. It’s also like taking some responsibility in understanding the character and delivering it.”
The 34-year-old actor said Spacey encouraged the cast to draw from their own life experiences. She noted that this approach was different from what she had experienced with other directors in India.
The Reality of Breaking into Hollywood
Patani spoke honestly about the challenges of entering the international film industry. She said the Western film industry puts a lot of importance on auditions. “The West focuses heavily on audition templates. You have to audition for things,” she explained.
She listed several factors that matter for actors trying to work in Hollywood. These include accessibility, representation, visa logistics, and talent agencies. Patani said many people think talent alone is enough, but the international industry works through a more structured system.
“A lot depends on accessibility. It depends on how accessible that is for you and who you are signed with. Destiny also plays a role. Sometimes, they just end up seeing your work and offer you projects and auditions. It also depends on the visa and other logistics. It’s all very technical.”
She gave a clear message to actors who want to work in Hollywood. “It is a different country at the end of the day. But you will have to be present. You can’t sit here and crack roles there. You can audition from here, but it is best to go there, stay for a bit and work on it. It is the same with any country”. She explained that actors need to go through many processes like auditions, working with agencies, and getting visas.
