Netflix has released the first trailer for the LEGO One Piece animated special, giving fans a look at the Straw Hat Pirates in brick form. The two-part special arrives on September 29, 2026, exclusively on the streaming platform. The trailer puts Usopp at the center of the story as the narrator, and the live-action cast returns to voice their characters.
Usopp Takes the Lead as the Unreliable Narrator
The special presents a clever storytelling device. Usopp, voiced by Jacob Romero, tells tall tales to Tony Tony Chopper about the crew’s adventures across the East Blue and into the Grand Line. The events take place right before Chopper officially joins the crew on Drum Island.
Usopp’s version of events does not match reality. In the trailer, he claims he single-handedly defeated Arlong and Alvida. He also says he came up with the idea to search for the One Piece. The other crew members call out his exaggerations throughout the special.
The official synopsis from Netflix describes the special as “the ALMOST true story of Captain Usopp the Brave”. This framing device allows the special to recap the events of Seasons 1 and 2 while adding a comedic twist.
Live-Action Cast Returns to Voice Brick Characters
The entire main cast from Netflix’s live-action One Piece series reprises their roles for the LEGO special. The English voice cast includes:
- Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy
- Emily Rudd as Nami
- Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro
- Jacob Romero as Usopp
- Taz Skylar as Sanji
- Mikaela Hoover as Tony Tony Chopper
The special also brings back Jeff Ward as Buggy the Clown. New additions to the voice cast include Katey Sagal as Dr. Kureha, Callum Kerr as Captain Smoker, and Charithra Chandran as both Miss Wednesday and Nefertari Vivi.
Japanese Voice Cast Also On Board
For Japanese audiences, the special features the original anime voice actors. This includes Kappei Yamaguchi as Usopp, Mayumi Tanaka as Luffy, Kazuya Nakai as Zoro, Akemi Okamura as Nami, Hiroaki Hirata as Sanji, and Ikue Otani as Chopper.
Trailer Shows Off LEGO Humor and Brick-Built Gags
The teaser trailer highlights the special’s comedic tone. One standout moment shows Dracule Mihawk pulling out a giant orange LEGO brick separator during his duel with Zoro. The trailer also gives glimpses of Fishmen battles, Chopper’s Heavy Point form, and Luffy’s stretching abilities.
The visual style captures the classic LEGO aesthetic with oversized expressions and creative brick-built scenes. Netflix also released a key visual featuring the Straw Hat Jolly Roger skull made entirely of LEGO bricks.
Showrunner Explains the Purpose of the Special
Tom Hyndman, who serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, explained why the special was created.
“We wanted to make something that would ease new viewers into the massive world of One Piece while also giving longtime fans a new, fun perspective to see the iconic stories of the first two seasons.”
Hyndman also spoke about working with the live-action cast.
“It was incredible to have them on board. It allowed us to really go wild during the records because we didn’t have to take extra time to have them find the character – they are the character. This freedom led to some extremely fun and funny improvised moments that really added to the episodes.”
Production Team and Behind the Scenes
The special comes from Atomic Cartoons, the animation studio known for Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends. Chelsea Ker directs the special, with Hyndman handling writing duties.
Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, serves as an executive producer on the project. Other executive producers include Keith Malone and Jill Wilfert from LEGO, along with Becky Clements and Marty Adelstein from Tomorrow Studios.
The special covers the events of the first two seasons of the live-action series. It runs for two parts and will be available worldwide on Netflix.
New LEGO One Piece Sets Arrive in August
Fans can also look forward to new LEGO One Piece sets releasing on August 1, 2026. The collection includes six sets inspired by Season 2 of the live-action series. These sets are currently available for preorder.
