What Happened Before Episode 4

Saga of Tanya the Evil tells the story of a cold and unemotional Japanese salaryman who is pushed in front of a train by a man he fired. Before dying, he challenges God, who then reincarnates him as Tanya Degurechaff, a young girl with blond hair and blue eyes in an alternate version of early 20th-century Europe.

Tanya now lives in a world where magic and modern military tactics shape the battlefield. She is a ruthless child soldier who leads the Imperial Army’s 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion. Her main goal is to survive the war and rise through the military ranks to avoid the front lines. However, a being she calls Being X, whom she believes is responsible for her reincarnation, continues to test her faith and place her in dangerous situations.

The first season, which aired in 2017, had 12 episodes. A film followed in 2019, and a special episode aired in 2021.

Season 2 picks up after the events of the first season and the film. The war continues to expand, and Tanya’s strategic brilliance is tested more than ever. She now leads the Salamander Kampfgruppe (Salamander Battle Group).

Episode 1, titled “Kampfgruppe Salamander,” began with Tanya praying to God in her own way. She then took command of an inexperienced battalion. The premiere featured intense aerial combat and showed the harsh realities of war.

Episode 2 introduced two important new characters. Liliya appeared as a loyal party member, while Mikel was shown as a highly capable mage who is expected to play a larger role in the battles ahead. The episode explored Tanya finding new ways to fight the Federation.

Episode 3, which came out on July 22, continued to build the larger story. The battles became more complicated, and the political landscape grew increasingly unstable. The episode showed the Salamander Battalion deploying. It also featured Being X appearing to Tanya in the form of a nutcracker sitting on a nightstand.

About the Original Series

Saga of Tanya the Evil started as a light novel series written by Carlo Zen and illustrated by Shinobu Shinotsuki. The first volume was released on October 31, 2013, and fourteen volumes have been released so far.

A manga adaptation with art by Chika Tojo began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace magazine from April 26, 2016, and has been collected into 34 volumes.

The series is known for its dark military fantasy setting, tactical warfare, aerial magic combat, and the sharp contrast between Tanya’s childlike appearance and her cold, calculating mindset. It explores themes of war, faith, and survival through the eyes of a protagonist who views the world through a purely logical and strategic lens.

Season 2 was announced on June 19, 2021. After a long wait, the season finally premiered on July 8, 2026.
