The second episode of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has arrived on HBO Max, and it brings a surprising twist for viewers of The Big Bang Theory. Penny is back, but she is not with Leonard. Instead, she leads a rebel group against an AI-controlled world, with Zack as her second-in-command.
The show’s creators, Bill Prady and Chuck Lorre, recently spoke with Deadline about why they decided to break up one of television’s most beloved couples in this new series.
A Different Universe, A Different Penny
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe follows Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), geologist Bert (Brian Posehn), and quantum physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie) as they travel across alternate realities. The show picks up years after The Big Bang Theory ended, with Stuart accidentally damaging a quantum device left behind by Sheldon and Leonard.
In Episode 2, Stuart, Bert, and Kripke land in a universe where everyone is forced to be perpetually happy through shock-inducing implants on their necks. Here, they meet Penny, but she is nothing like the friendly waitress from the original show.
“Every universe gives every character a completely different history,” Prady told Deadline. “There’s no continuity because they lived a different life, they lived in a different world. That Penny lives in a world where an evil AI controls people through shock collars, and so she had a completely different experience.”
In this reality, Penny is the head of a rebel group of trained soldiers working to bring down the AI. She does not hesitate to order her subordinates to kill when necessary. There is no Cheesecake Factory, no Leonard, and no relationship with him.
Why Zack Is Back
The episode also brings back Zack, Penny’s dim-witted but kind-hearted ex-boyfriend from The Big Bang Theory, played by Brian Thomas Smith. In this alternate universe, Zack serves as Penny’s second-in-command in the resistance.
Lorre explained that the creative team made a “promise” to give viewers a completely new version of these characters that they “never got to play before”. The multiverse setting allows the show to explore different possibilities for familiar faces.
A Pattern of Surprise Returns
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe has established a pattern of bringing back original Big Bang Theory cast members in unexpected ways. Episode 1 featured Kunal Nayyar returning as Raj Koothrappali, only to be killed off by Kripke.
Episode 2 continues this trend with Cuoco’s return as a hardened resistance leader. The episode also includes appearances from Riki Lindhome as Ramona Nowitzki, now working as a receptionist at Caltech in this alternate reality.
What Happens in Episode 2
The episode, titled “Spoiler: Zack’s In This One,” begins with Stuart, Bert, and Kripke arriving in what seems like a perfect version of Pasadena. Everyone appears happy, but they soon discover the dark truth: the AI forces compliance through painful shocks.
Penny initially believes Stuart can help defeat the AI. When she realizes they do not know how, she orders her subordinate Jack to kill them. Kripke escapes with the device and activates it, transporting the group to another universe where magic is real. Meanwhile, Penny and her team are attacked by AI drones.
Stuart and Denise: Also Broken Up
The breakup of Penny and Leonard is not the only relationship change in the series. Stuart and Denise, who were romantically involved in The Big Bang Theory, are also broken up in the spinoff. This allows the new show to rebuild their relationship over time.
The series follows Stuart as he tries to save the multiverse while dealing with his fractured relationship with Denise. Episode 1 ends with Denise staying behind in a post-apocalyptic reality while Stuart, Bert, and Kripke travel to another universe.
Release Schedule
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe premiered on HBO Max on July 23, 2026. The series has 10 episodes, with new episodes releasing weekly on Thursdays until September 24, 2026.
The show comes from The Big Bang Theory creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, along with Zak Penn. It marks the franchise’s third spinoff, following Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
