Stuart Fails to Save the Universe continues its multiverse journey with a second episode that trades the post-apocalyptic wasteland for something far more disturbing—a world where everyone is forced to be nice.
Episode 2, titled “Spoiler: Zack’s In This One,” premiered on HBO Max on July 30, 2026. The episode follows Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie), and Bert Kibbler (Brian Posehn) as they land in an alternate Pasadena that looks peaceful but hides a dark secret.
The spin-off series, created by Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Zak Penn, continues to deliver surprises with each new universe. Following Kunal Nayyar’s appearance as Raj in the premiere, Episode 2 brings back four familiar faces from The Big Bang Theory.
AI Control Creates a Fake Utopia
The episode drops Stuart, Bert, and Kripke into a reality where everyone behaves with unnatural politeness. The secret behind this forced happiness is a device implanted in everyone’s neck. Any negative emotion or argument triggers a painful electric shock.
The trio quickly discovers that this world is not the paradise it appears to be. When Stuart and Kripke argue inside the comic book store, the devices activate and tase them. Bert finds the receptor on his neck, and Kripke gets tased again when he starts arguing.
Outside, the group notices that everyone is nice to each other because of the neck receptors. Kripke decides to find Leonard and Sheldon at Caltech, hoping they can help. Stuart wants to search for Denise, who got separated from the group at the end of the premiere.
Familiar Faces Return in Unexpected Roles
Riki Lindhome reprises her role as Ramona Nowitzki, the woman who once tried to steal Sheldon away from Amy. In this universe, she works as a receptionist at Caltech rather than a graduate student. She refuses to let Kripke and Bert see Leonard and Sheldon without an appointment.
Kripke loses his cool repeatedly and gets tased over and over again. Bert and Kripke leave Caltech but find police officers waiting to arrest them. Their crime? Getting upset too often.
The episode delivers its most unexpected cameo when the trio arrives at a reeducation camp. Christine Baranski appears on screen playing herself rather than Leonard’s mother Beverly. In the introductory video, Baranski explains that this world was in turmoil until scientists built an AI to alter human minds. The AI later turned bad, killed its creators, and implanted punishment receptors in every human.
“The biggest thrill of the cameo was simply reuniting with the actress on set, calling the experience a genuine gift going back to their earlier collaborations together,” Chuck Lorre said of Baranski’s appearance.
Stuart Makes a Bold Move for Denise
Stuart tracks down Denise (Lauren Lapkus) in this alternate reality. He finds her married to Gary (Tommy Walker), the same man who was Denise’s boyfriend in the post-apocalyptic Pasadena from the premiere.
Stuart sits in Denise and Gary’s living room and makes a bold declaration.
“Denise, you and I are destined to be together, and I have come from a parallel universe to claim you,” Stuart says in the episode.
Kevin Sussman spoke about this moment in an interview with Deadline.
“That’s interesting that you bring that up because that’s pretty un-Stuart like,” Sussman said. “So I guess if there is some growth for Stuart, it’s that his love for her pushes him into a kind of assertiveness that he never would have had on the original show.”
Denise is stuck in an unhappy marriage. The neck device prevents her from expressing any negative emotion. Lauren Lapkus explained Denise’s situation.
“In that universe, we have buzzers on our necks that stop us from ever being rude or saying anything that’s not totally happy, so she’s conditioned at that point to just act like everything’s fine, and to have someone coming into her apartment saying like, you don’t have to live like this like, I’m gonna get you out of here, she can’t even react because she knows that she’ll just be writhing on the floor,” Lapkus said.
The Resistance and Penny’s Return
After 30 months in the reeducation camp, Stuart, Bert, and Kripke are released. They are kidnapped by a resistance group led by none other than Kaley Cuoco’s Penny.
This is not the Penny from The Big Bang Theory. She is a ruthless guerrilla leader who violently slaps Stuart, Bert, and Kripke to “deprogram” them. Zack (Brian Thomas Smith), Penny’s dim-witted but kind-hearted ex-boyfriend from the original series, serves as her loyal lieutenant.
Chuck Lorre explained why Penny was chosen to lead the resistance.
“The fun of this series is the unlikely character assuming a new role,” Lorre said.
Bill Prady added that Penny was always the most capable member of the original group.
“Penny was always the most capable member of the original group,” Prady said. “If you had to actually get something done, you were probably better off if Penny was in charge of it.”
The creators also addressed why Penny is with Zack in this universe rather than Leonard.
“Because that’s what happened in that universe, we don’t know what Leonard is doing in that universe,” Prady said. “Every universe gives every character a completely different history. There’s no continuity because they lived a different life, they lived in a different world.”
Lorre added a simple explanation.
“There was no Cheesecake Factory in her life,” Lorre said, referencing Penny’s place of work for most of The Big Bang Theory’s run.
The Escape and a New Universe
Penny believes Stuart, Bert, and Kripke hold the key to defeating the AI regime. In reality, all they possess is the quantum interference device built by Leonard, Sheldon, and Howard.
Denise walks in with the time-altering machine. She sought the resistance’s help. Kripke distracts everyone and runs with the machine. Drones swarm in, tasing everyone.
Amidst the chaos, Stuart, Bert, Kripke, and Denise get transported to another universe. The episode ends in a world where magic is real and scientists are burned at the stake. Bert finds himself moments away from a fiery execution.

The second episode establishes a clear pattern for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. Each universe brings new dangers, new versions of familiar faces, and a new set of rules. The show uses its multiverse concept to reimagine characters from The Big Bang Theory in unexpected ways.
Episode 2 also deepens Stuart and Denise’s relationship. By the end of the episode, Denise has joined Stuart, Bert, and Kripke. She and Stuart are seen holding hands while leaping into the next universe together.
