The new Spider-Man movie has made history even before its official worldwide release. Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned USD 72 million from paid previews, breaking the all-time preview record previously held by Avengers: Endgame.

USD 72 million from preview screenings

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hit theatres in North America on Friday, with a staggered early release on Thursday in some international markets including India. The film collected USD 72 million in paid previews on Thursday, which also included early-access screenings on Wednesday in the US and some international territories.

This is the highest box-office collection from previews by any film in history. The previous record belonged to Avengers: Endgame, which earned USD 60 million in Thursday previews back in 2019. Endgame went on to set the record for the biggest opening weekend of all time, earning USD 357 million in the US and a staggering USD 1.2 billion worldwide.

Projected opening weekend numbers

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day is unlikely to challenge Endgame‘s overall opening weekend numbers, the film is still projected to have a massive start. Industry tracking suggests the movie will open around USD 250-260 million in North America and approximately USD 550 million globally.

If these projections hold, it would give the film the biggest opening of the year and the second-biggest opening ever in North America. The film is co-produced by Marvel Studios and Sony.

Record-breaking performance in India

In India, one of the markets where Brand New Day launched early with a Thursday release, the film has shattered several box office records. It opened with a collection of ₹60 crore net (approximately USD 8 million gross) on day one. This is the highest day 1 collection by a Hollywood film in India, surpassing the records of Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and The Odyssey.

On Friday, the film added another ₹49 crore net (about USD 6.5 million gross) to its total. The film has already outperformed the opening day collections of major Bollywood blockbusters including Pathaan (₹57 crore) and Dhurandhar (₹32 crore).

What is Spider-Man: Brand New Day about?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the fourth solo adventure starring Tom Holland as everyone’s favourite teenage superhero. The film is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and brings back Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned.

The story sees Peter Parker living entirely on his own as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him. As he deals with the mounting pressure of watching his old friends move on without him, Spider-Man faces new dangers with the introduction of fresh villains.

Destin Daniel Cretton directs the film, which also features Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo, and Jon Bernthal in pivotal roles.

A new chapter for the web-slinger

The film marks a significant turning point for the character following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker made the ultimate sacrifice to have the world forget his identity. Now completely alone and without the support system he once had, this new chapter explores Peter’s resilience and determination to continue his mission as the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.

The addition of new cast members like Sadie Sink has generated considerable buzz among fans, while the returns of Mark Ruffalo and Jon Bernthal have added to the excitement. Ruffalo’s involvement is particularly noteworthy given his role as Bruce Banner/Hulk in the MCU, suggesting potential crossovers or connections to the wider Marvel universe.

The road ahead

With the film already breaking records before its full worldwide release, the box office trajectory looks extremely promising. The USD 72 million preview number indicates strong audience demand and positive word-of-mouth. The film’s performance in international markets, particularly in India where it has already set new benchmarks, suggests that Spider-Man: Brand New Day could be one of the biggest hits of 2026.

The movie’s release comes at a time when the superhero genre continues to dominate global cinema. With Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man consistently drawing audiences worldwide, this fourth instalment appears poised to continue that trend. The combination of a compelling storyline, strong cast, and the built-in fanbase from previous films has clearly resonated with moviegoers.

As the weekend progresses, all eyes will be on the final box office numbers to see if Spider-Man: Brand New Day can meet or exceed its projected USD 250-260 million opening in North America. Regardless of the final tally, the film has already secured its place in box office history with its record-breaking preview performance.
