What Is Legacy of Spies About

Legacy of Spies adapts The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, le Carré’s 1963 Cold War classic, and draws additional material from his 2017 novel A Legacy of Spies. The eight-part drama brings together stories published 54 years apart to show both the urgency of a Cold War operation and the questions that surface decades later.

The main storyline follows Alec Leamas, a seasoned British intelligence officer who recruits Doris Quinz, a young East German woman, to smuggle high-value Stasi documents into the West. Their mission sets off a chain of events in Cold War Berlin. Pursuing them are two Stasi operatives, Josef Fiedler and Hans-Dieter Mundt, whose rivalry and determination to shut down the intelligence leak drive much of the tension. Liz Gold, an idealistic young woman, becomes entangled in the operation and forces Leamas to confront a world where loyalty fractures and betrayal is inevitable.

Behind the scenes, George Smiley orchestrates operations while the Soviet mastermind Karla remains a looming threat. The second timeline from A Legacy of Spies follows Peter Guillam, a former colleague of Smiley, as he is forced to revisit decisions made during the Cold War when people connected to the victims of Leamas’s mission seek accountability from British intelligence.
