What Happened in Episode 5
Episode 5, titled “Young Gunz,” aired on August 1, 2026. The episode followed Jiro and Reiji as they took on their first official mission for the Bureau of Espionage. Their task: investigate Rago’s former prison and uncover the mystery of who freed him and how he escaped.
The action moved to an underground space where Rago had once been sealed within a Sesshoseki (killing stone). There, Jiro and Reiji encountered a mononoke who called himself Gakyo. Gakyo was working with the people who had set Rago free, and a battle broke out as he tried to claim Rago’s power for himself.
The episode featured a proper action sequence that one of the animators described as their first time animating a full action scene.
The Story So Far
BLACK TORCH follows Jiro Azuma, a high school student and descendant of ninjas who has the ability to communicate with animals. After rescuing an injured black cat named Rago, Jiro discovers the cat is actually a mononoke—an immortal spirit known as the legendary “Black Star of Doom”.
Rago was being hunted by other mononoke seeking to exploit his power. When Jiro was mortally wounded protecting Rago, the cat fused with him, saving his life and granting him supernatural abilities. Now bound together, Jiro and Rago work with the Bureau of Espionage to fight against evil mononoke threatening humanity.
The anime adaptation is directed by Kei Umabiki at 100studio, with Gigaemon Ichikawa handling series composition, Go Suzuki on character designs, and Yutaka Yamada composing the music. The opening theme “Freeze Me Up” is performed by SiM, and the ending theme “Groooovy” is by I Don’t Like Mondays.
The series is expected to run for 12 episodes in total.
