What Happened in Episode 4

Episode 4, which aired on August 2, 2026, saw the court drama intensify. The Empress fell ill, and Reirin became convinced that she could only stop the perpetrator by returning to her original body. This led her to sneak into the sealed Shu Palace.

Reirin discovered that the Noble Consort was responsible for the curse affecting the Empress. Working with Keigetsu, they returned to the pantry to find answers. Meanwhile, as a result of the commotion in the inner court, Reirin was ordered by Noble Consort Shu to relocate her room—a punishment that served as banishment in disguise.

The episode continued building the tension between the two leads, showing how their lives became increasingly intertwined as they uncovered darker conspiracies beneath the palace’s pleasant surface.

The Story So Far

The series follows Kou Reirin, a maiden known as the “court butterfly” for her beauty and kindness, who is beloved by the Crown Prince. Shu Keigetsu, another maiden, is despised and called the “court sewer rat”. During the Double Sevens Festival, Keigetsu uses forbidden magic to swap bodies with Reirin.

With a looming execution hanging over her, Reirin embraces her new, healthy body. Keigetsu, now in Reirin’s body, learns that Reirin’s life is not what it seems as she gets pulled into an inner-court conspiracy. The two must collaborate to survive after discovering dark conspiracies brewing beneath the palace’s welcoming surface.

The Japanese title of the series is Futsutsuka na Akujo dewa Gozaimasu ga: Suuguu Chouso Torikae Den. It is based on a light novel series written by Satsuki Nakamura, which originated on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in July 2020.

Voice Cast

The main cast includes:

  • Manaka Iwami as Kou Reirin
  • Natsumi Kawaida as Shu Keigetsu
  • Makoto Furukawa as Ei Gyoumei
  • Yuuichirou Umehara as Shin-u

Why This Series Stands Out

The body-swap premise offers a fresh perspective on the villainess genre. Instead of a typical isekai reincarnation, the show explores what happens when two women with completely different social standings are forced to live each other’s lives. Reirin, who was frail and beloved, now inhabits a healthy but despised body. Keigetsu, who was hated and strong, now lives as the court’s favorite.

The series has drawn comparisons to The Apothecary Diaries for its intricate court politics and compelling lead characters. The animation studio Doga Kobo, known for works like Oshi no Ko and Yuru Camp, brings the lavish Maiden Court setting to life.

With 12 episodes planned for the season, the story is building toward a climax that will determine the fate of both Reirin and Keigetsu. Episode 5 is expected to continue exploring the aftermath of the body swap and the growing conspiracy within the palace walls.
