The Dance of the Dragons reached its breaking point in Episode 7 of House of the Dragon Season 3. Titled “The Dragon in Winter,” the penultimate episode delivered dragon-on-dragon combat, a shocking resurrection, and a betrayal that could cost Rhaenyra the war.

Sunfyre Returns From the Dead
The episode’s closing sequence delivered one of the show’s most unforgettable moments. King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), presumed dead after the Battle of Rook’s Rest, has spent the season hiding and humiliated. His dragon Sunfyre was also believed dead.
When Rhaenyra’s forces corner Aegon and Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall), Aegon chooses to die standing rather than flee again. He steps forward, reveals his identity, and declares himself the rightful king. The army begins to shrink back.
Then Sunfyre emerges from the woods. The dragon looks as maimed and broken as his rider. Aegon, shocked to see his dragon alive, quickly orders him to burn the army. The reunion between rider and dragon transforms despair into exhilaration. Aegon screams in sync with Sunfyre, both disfigured and defiant.
How Did Sunfyre Survive?
The show does not provide a clear explanation for Sunfyre’s return. The most likely reason is that the dragon was lying completely dormant after the Battle of Rook’s Rest and appeared dead. In Episode 4, Aegon insisted he could feel that Sunfyre was still alive. The dragon’s return will likely be attributed to a dormant or meditative state that looked like death.
In George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, Sunfyre is severely wounded at Rook’s Rest but does not die. Criston Cole and his men find the dragon and slowly nurse him back to strength. The show appears to be putting the story back on track with the source material.
Rhaenyra Faces Betrayal From Within
While Aegon experiences a moment of triumph, Rhaenyra’s position weakens considerably. The episode reveals that Ulf the White (Tom Bennett), the dragonseed who rides the dragon Silverwing, has been turned against Rhaenyra.
Lord Ormund Hightower (James Norton) is the mastermind behind the scheme. He persuades Ulf to abandon Rhaenyra’s side by promising him greater respect and a better future. In Martin’s Fire & Blood, both Ulf and Hugh Hammer betray Rhaenyra at Tumbleton, becoming known as the “Two Betrayers”.
The plan involves multiple coordinated attacks:
- Raising the smallfolk against Rhaenyra in King’s Landing
- Forcing Rhaenyra to attack Tumbleton, where innocent people will die
- Kidnapping Corlys Velaryon for ransom
Ormund has been setting this up all season. He correctly surmises that Rhaenyra will not attack Tumbleton with dragons and risk killing innocent smallfolk. This gives him time to undermine her rule.
Dragon Battle in the Vale
The episode features one of the season’s most intense dragon confrontations. Rhaenyra discovers that Daemon (Matt Smith) has been lying to her about their daughter Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell).
Rhaenyra flies to confront them, accompanied by Addam of Hull (Clinton Liberty) on Seasmoke. They face Rhaena and her wild dragon Sheepstealer. Multiple dragons attack Sheepstealer mid-air, leaving the dragon seriously injured. Rhaena is captured and brought back to King’s Landing.
The dragon conflict highlights the emotional connection between riders and their dragons. As the humans shout at each other, their dragons roar and threaten to flame, reflecting the human emotions.
Aemond’s Disturbing Dream and Alicent’s Arrival
At Harrenhal, Prince Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) experiences one of the episode’s most unsettling sequences. He dreams of his mother Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) arriving at Harrenhal. The dream takes a disturbing turn as they kiss and become intimate. Aemond then wakes to find Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) in his bed instead.
The real Alicent has actually arrived at Harrenhal. She has come to find her son, but their reunion is anything but warm. Their conversation culminates with Alicent attempting to poison Aemond. The scene showcases how the Green family has been corrupted by hatred.
Helaena’s Prophetic Visions
The episode opens with Queen Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban) having visions. She sees herself giving birth, with the child taken from her by Rhaenyra’s men. She also sees herself on her dragon Dreamfyre inside the Dragonpit, facing an angry mob. An eclipse moves across the sky, and winter arrives with absolute force.
Rhaenyra pressures Helaena to share her dreams, desperate for reassurance that she is on the right path. Helaena offers little comfort. The visions establish that whatever is coming for King’s Landing will not spare the people inside the walls.

Episode 7 fundamentally reshapes the board ahead of the Season 3 finale. Several key developments set up the final episode:
