Bollywood actress Mrunal Thakur has taken a tough stance against the growing misuse of artificial intelligence. The actress recently warned people who create or share deepfake content using her face and identity. She made it clear that such actions are not acceptable and will lead to legal consequences.
The Dacoit actress shared a strong message on her Instagram on August 4, 2026. In her post, she called the creation and sharing of deepfake content “illegal and unacceptable.” She also gave a formal notice to those involved in such activities, asking them to stop right away.
Mrunal Thakur’s Legal Warning on Social Media
Mrunal Thakur did not hold back while addressing the issue of AI deepfakes. She took to Instagram and made her position very clear. The actress said that using her likeness without permission is a violation of her rights.
“Creating or sharing deepfake content using my likeness is illegal and unacceptable. Consider this your formal notice to stop immediately. Any further misuse of my identity will result in legal action.”
The actress did not specify what exactly triggered her warning. However, her message was direct and carried a sense of urgency. She made it clear that she would not tolerate any further misuse of her identity.
Mrunal also shared a post on her X account (formerly Twitter) where she encouraged people to report accounts that harass others or share non-consensual AI-generated images. She called out those who think they can get away with such actions without facing any consequences.
Deepfake Problem Growing in Entertainment Industry
The issue of deepfakes has become a major concern for celebrities worldwide. In India, many actors have fallen victim to manipulated videos and images. These AI-generated contents are often shared widely on social media platforms, causing harm to the reputation and mental well-being of public figures.
Rashmika Mandanna was one of the first major Bollywood actors to speak out against deepfakes. In 2023, a manipulated video of her went viral online. The video showed a woman in a black workout outfit inside an elevator, but her face was digitally replaced with Rashmika’s using AI. Rashmika called the experience “extremely scary” and urged people and authorities to take the issue seriously.
Last year, Rashmika again spoke about the misuse of AI, especially when it comes to creating vulgar and harmful content targeting women. She wrote on X, “When truth can be manufactured, discernment becomes our greatest defense.” She also said, “AI is a force for progress, but its misuse to create vulgarity and target women signals a deep moral decline in certain people”.
Other Bollywood Stars Taking Legal Action
Mrunal Thakur is not alone in her fight against AI misuse. Several Bollywood stars have taken legal steps to protect their identity, image, and voice from unauthorised use.
Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan, Anil Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta, Kartik Aaryan, and Suniel Shetty are among the actors who have approached courts to safeguard their personality rights.
Preity Zinta recently approached the Bombay High Court over AI deepfakes. The court asked Google and Meta to create a takedown plan for such content.
Other stars like Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, and Karan Johar have also filed cases. Even singers like Kumar Sanu, Asha Bhosale, and Arijit Singh have joined the movement to protect their voices from AI cloning.
Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor were among the early adopters of legal action against AI misuse. Their cases set a precedent for other celebrities to follow.
Social Media Users React to Mrunal’s Warning
Mrunal Thakur’s post quickly went viral on social media. It gathered more than 1 million views on X. Many users came forward to support the actress and her decision to take legal action.
One user wrote, “This is criminal! Cyber cell needs to act upon and punish these people”. Another commented, “You are completely correct and have all the rights to speak up for yourself as, behind all the headlines, there is a real person who is you, so you shouldn’t be afraid to say what they need to hear”.
Some users even suggested that Mrunal should not give any more chances and take legal action right away. However, not everyone agreed. One user pointed out that deepfakes are everywhere on the internet and that trying to stop them might make things worse.
Despite the mixed reactions, the majority of social media users stood with Mrunal and appreciated her bold move.
