MBC’s new Friday-Saturday drama A Bona Fide Killer is off to a strong start in the ratings, but actor Jung Jun-won‘s casting as lead character Kwon Tae-sung has divided audiences. Some viewers who loved the original webtoon say the actor does not match the character’s description, while others argue the drama adaptation should be judged on its own merits.
The second episode of A Bona Fide Killer, which aired on August 1, recorded a peak nationwide rating of 10.6% and an average nationwide rating of 8.0% among paid households, according to Nielsen Korea. The drama ranked No. 1 among all Friday-Saturday dramas, signalling a successful launch despite the ongoing casting debate. The premiere episode had earlier opened with 7.4%, showing early growth in viewership.
What is ‘A Bona Fide Killer’ About?
A Bona Fide Killer is an action drama based on a popular webtoon of the same name. It follows Yoo Bo Na, played by Gong Hyo-jin, a working mother who appears to live an ordinary life but secretly works as a legendary sniper known as “Kingfisher”. She balances her duties as a mother, wife, and daughter-in-law with her deadly missions.
Jung Jun-won plays Kwon Tae-sung, Bo Na’s husband and a reporter on a newspaper’s investigative reporting team. He is described as a devoted husband, a doting father, and a fearless journalist who chases injustice without hesitation. The drama also features Lee Sang Yi as inspector Lee Dong Jin, a detective pursuing Kingfisher, and Sung Dong Il as Kim Bong Pal, Bo Na’s reliable ally.
The series premiered on July 31, 2026, and airs every Friday and Saturday at 21:50 KST on MBC. It also streams on Rakuten Viki for international audiences.
Why Fans Are Questioning the Casting
The debate centres on how Jung Jun-won’s appearance compares to the original webtoon character. In the source material, Kwon Tae-sung is described as an exceptionally handsome man whose striking looks immediately captivate the female lead at first sight. Because his appearance plays an important narrative role in the original story, some readers questioned Jung’s casting as soon as it was announced.
Those concerns resurfaced after the drama premiered. Some viewers shared their disappointment online:

What Jung Jun-won Said About the Role
During the drama’s production press conference on July 30, Jung Jun-won addressed the inevitable comparisons with the original work. He explained that the television adaptation intentionally reinterprets the character rather than replicating the webtoon exactly.
“I read the webtoon near the end of filming. I felt that the Tae-sung in the script was somewhat different from the Tae-sung in the webtoon,” he said.
He also shared his interpretation: “In the original, there’s a setting where Bona falls for Tae-sung because of his looks. But I didn’t think that aspect was as necessary in the drama.”
The actor further explained that the script and some character settings changed during the adaptation process. He added: “Tae-sung can appear attractive because he loves his wife and daughter, treats them warmly, and works hard at his job. I did not think too deeply about the issue.”
Director Defends the Casting Choice
Director Yoon Jong Ho also defended the casting and praised Jung Jun-won’s performance.
“Everyone has different standards. In my eyes, Jung Jun-won is very handsome. This drama presents a more realistic story rather than copying the beautiful young man shown in the webtoon,” the director said.
He continued: “I believe Jung Jun-won portrayed the character even better than I expected.”
Original Webtoon Creator Praises the Actor
Despite the ongoing casting and attitude controversies, the original webtoon creator, known as YOON, expressed satisfaction with the drama after its premiere.
On July 31, YOON shared on social media: “Everyone acted so well that I was amazed to see them naturally deliver even the difficult lines”.
The creator specifically praised Jung Jun-won: “Jung Jun-won also acted so well that Tae-sung fit the role perfectly. In fact, when I read the script, I could hear Jun-won’s voice from the writing, so I thought he suited it very well. In reality, he delivered even better than I expected, confirming he is indeed the best actor. His soft image suits the family-oriented Tae-sung, the doting father Tae-sung, perfectly.”
Variety Show Appearance Adds to the Debate
Jung Jun-won appeared with Gong Hyo-jin on the August 1 episode of MBC’s Hangout with Yoo to promote the drama. During the broadcast, the cast asked him to participate in an acting challenge where one sentence had to be delivered with different emotions.
The actor hesitated and moved his lips without speaking, leaving the cast visibly surprised. He later received another opportunity but again appeared too nervous to deliver the line. Gong Hyo-jin eventually completed the challenge instead.
After the episode aired, viewers shared divided opinions. Some criticised Jung Jun-won for appearing unprepared, while others defended him, suggesting he may have felt uncomfortable due to limited variety show experience or natural shyness.
Actor Opens Up About Pressure and Self-Perception
In a recent YouTube interview, Jung Jun-won spoke about the pressure he felt ahead of the drama’s release.
“With Resident Playbook, I was one of several cast members, but with this project, I had no prior experience with this kind of role. It felt like being put on a judging platform where I had to prove myself, so I was very worried,” he said.
He also reflected on his self-perception as an actor: “It’s been over 10 years since I debuted, but I still can’t get used to seeing myself on screen. If I feel that way, I think viewers might feel the same.”
However, he sees his ordinary, approachable image as a potential strength: “People around me say I look average, but I think that might actually help viewers focus more on the character and the story. I’m not flashy or strikingly handsome, but having an actor with a face you might see in real life could help audiences emotionally connect with even a fantasy story.”
