Will Gluck’s new romantic comedy One Night Only hits theaters on August 7, 2026, and it’s already sparking strong reactions from critics. The film stars Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner as two strangers searching for connection on the one night a year when single people are legally allowed to have sex.
Some reviewers are calling it a fun, charming throwback to classic rom-coms. Others say its bizarre premise and shaky world-building sink the whole thing.

The film is set in a near-future America where Congress passed “the mandate” three years ago. This law makes premarital sex illegal for single people. The only exception is one 12-hour period each year — the titular “One Night Only”.
Everyone is fitted with a biosensor in their arm that monitors things like dopamine and oxytocin. If you break the rules on any other night, the sensor alerts the authorities and you get arrested.
On this special night, the streets of New York City fill with singles looking for partners. Owen (Callum Turner) runs a pizzeria and planned to propose to his girlfriend. But she drops a bombshell — she wants to use the night to sleep with someone else.
Allie (Monica Barbaro) is a jingle singer tired of empty hookups. She’s determined to find something real. The two keep running into each other throughout the chaotic night, and their initial dislike slowly turns into something more.
A Star-Studded Cast
The supporting cast is packed with familiar faces. Maya Hawke plays Owen’s girlfriend. Julia Fox, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton also appear. Other names include Pete Davidson, Bobby Cannavale, Jay Ellis, and Nicholas Braun.
The screenplay comes from Travis Braun, whose script landed on the prestigious Black List of best unproduced Hollywood screenplays.
What Critics Are Saying
The reviews are all over the map.
The Boston Globe gave it just 1.5 stars, calling it a “disastrous throwback rom-com” with an “unbelievable premise”. The reviewer pointed out logical holes: “How exactly is Arya getting around this? What is the sentence for repeat offenders?”
The Chicago Tribune said the film “exists on the vapors of a bizarre plot and the appeal of hot actors”. They noted that Turner and Barbaro “have charm up the wazoo,” but the premise itself keeps nagging at you.
ScreenRant disagreed strongly. They gave it a positive review, calling it “sexy, hilarious, and tremendously fun”. They argued it’s “an honest-to-goodness romantic comedy” that uses its high-concept twist to serve the romance and comedy.
Den of Geek praised the leads’ “breezy chemistry” and said the film is “cleverer than it has any right to be”.
Other outlets were more critical. The Akron Beacon Journal called it a “mish-mash of genres and sensibilities that wouldn’t seem to go together”. They said the film “is not all that funny” despite the actors’ chemistry.
Flickering Myth gave it 2 out of 5 stars, saying the film “takes a confused stand against sex while making a backward statement about love”.

The Boston Globe noted that gay characters are barely present, with only one lesbian character who makes little sense in the film’s logic. The Chicago Tribune called the whole setup “dated and under-explored”.

Should You See It?
If you enjoy Will Gluck’s previous work like Easy A or Anyone But You, you might find things to like here. The leads have genuine chemistry, and the supporting cast is full of fun cameos.
But if you need your movies to make logical sense, One Night Only will likely frustrate you. The world-building raises more questions than it answers.
