The wait for Mirzapur fans is finally ending. The popular crime series is making its way to the big screen, and producer Farhan Akhtar has made it clear that this move happened because of one simple reason — the fans wanted it.
At the trailer launch event for Mirzapur: The Movie on August 11, 2026, Farhan Akhtar opened up about how audience demand played a key role in bringing the franchise to theatres. The film is set to release in cinemas on September 4, 2026.
Farhan Akhtar: ‘Fans Demanded This Movie’
Speaking to the media at the trailer launch, Farhan Akhtar shared that the love and support from viewers over the years made the theatrical film possible. He said the team never planned a movie version initially, but the constant questions from fans pushed them in that direction.
“The show is a result of fans’ love. They have supported the show from the time it was first released. Amazon took it across the world. Wherever I used to go, people used to ask me, ‘Ki Mirzapur kab aa rha hai?’ When it was announced, people used to ask me the release date, so it is really the fans that have demanded this movie. We are very happy and grateful to have put it together with the original cast and the amazing new cast.”
The producer also shared a funny story about how the series first came to be. When writer Puneet Krishna first pitched the story, Farhan said his initial reaction was to send him to a “brain doctor” because the idea was so surprising. But they eventually decided to turn it into a show, and the rest is history.
“When Puneet came to us for the first time, our first instinct was to refer him to a brain doctor. Then we thought of making it into a show so that people can get into it. Guru and Puneet are the heroes of the show. Ritesh, I, Excel Entertainment, and Amazon, we are really happy that we have been there to support them through this journey and work with them.”
Trailer Released on August 11
The official trailer for Mirzapur: The Movie dropped on August 11, 2026, giving fans their first proper look at what the big-screen version has to offer. The trailer brings back the gritty, violent world that made the series a hit, with Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Pandit, and Munna Bhaiya all returning.
The story picks up from the world of Season 1, with the battle for the Gaddi (the seat of power) at the centre of the plot. New contenders enter the race, challenging the established power structure. The conflict expands beyond Purvanchal this time, taking the action into deserts and a wider cinematic landscape.
The film is directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna. It is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the Excel Entertainment banner, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani serving as co-producers. Amazon MGM Studios presents the film.
