The first review for Batwara 1947 is finally out, and it is nothing short of glowing. Filmmaker Ramesh Taurani has called the Sunny Deol-starrer a “deeply sensitive, moving and truly humanity-glorifying film” that deserves to be watched on the very first day of its release. The review has arrived just one day before the film’s theatrical debut, setting high expectations for this Rajkumar Santoshi-directed Partition drama.
Ramesh Taurani Calls Batwara 1947 a Must-Watch
Ramesh Taurani, who attended a special screening of Batwara 1947 alongside producer Aamir Khan and actor Ali Fazal, took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the film. His review was nothing short of praise for the entire team.
“Batwara 1947 is a deeply sensitive, moving and truly humanity-glorifying film that deserves to be watched First Day, First Show. It is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of compassion, especially during the darkest chapters of our history.”
Taurani did not hold back when it came to praising the cast. He described Sunny Deol’s performance as “terrific and deeply impactful”. The filmmaker also expressed joy at seeing Preity Zinta return to the big screen after nearly a decade, calling it “a joy” to watch her do what she does best.
The Ensemble Cast Receives High Praise
Taurani also highlighted the supporting cast, praising Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, and Karan Deol for their performances. He wrote that they were “all exceptional in their respective roles, bringing such depth, intensity and authenticity to the film”.
Special mention was given to Abhimanyu Singh, who plays the antagonist in the film. Taurani called him “terrific as the villain, creating a character that is both compelling and deeply unsettling”.
The filmmaker also congratulated director Rajkumar Santoshi for delivering a story that strikes an emotional chord with audiences. “His ability to bring humanity, emotion and heart to his films is truly special,” Taurani wrote.
What Batwara 1947 Is About
Batwara 1947 is set against the backdrop of the Partition of India in 1947. The film stars Sunny Deol as a Muslim man who moves to Pakistan during Partition, only to find a Hindu woman, played by Shabana Azmi, still living in his new home. As tensions rise, he takes responsibility for protecting her while keeping his family safe.
The film marks Preity Zinta’s return to the big screen after almost a decade. It also features the first on-screen collaboration between Sunny Deol and his son, Karan Deol, who plays his son in the film. The ensemble cast also includes Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, and Kanikka Kapur.
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions, the film has music by AR Rahman and lyrics by Javed Akhtar.
The Film’s Focus on Humanity Over Religion
Sunny Deol has been clear that Batwara 1947 does not take political sides or cater to the current political climate. The actor has said that the film focuses on human endurance and the tragedy of Partition, avoiding modern political debates.
“We don’t make films to propagate hatred,” Deol said ahead of the film’s release. “The film is not trying to make a political statement or preach a message. We never approached the film with the intention of taking sides or tailoring it to suit the current political climate.”
Rajkumar Santoshi has also emphasized that the core of the story is human courage and will, not the divide between people. “This is an emotional story. But Batwara 1947 takes the middle road, almost, showing humanity in people,” the director said.

Batwara 1947 is scheduled to release worldwide in cinemas on August 14, 2026, coinciding with Partition Day. The release date is strategically placed just one day before India’s Independence Day, making it an ideal window for a film based on such a significant historical subject.
The film faces competition from Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 at the box office. Advance bookings for both films opened around 48 hours before their theatrical release.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Batwara 1947 had sold around 30,000 tickets nationwide for day one, grossing ₹81 lakh. In comparison, Awarapan 2 had sold over 1 lakh tickets and grossed ₹3.25 crore from advance bookings. The film has generated approximately Rs 95.09 lakh gross in pre-sales, with the data excluding blocked seats.
Trade analyst Sumit Kadel predicts that Batwara 1947 could open at around Rs 7-9 crore net on its first day.
Aamir Khan’s Involvement and Production
Batwara 1947 is backed by Aamir Khan Productions, marking the first collaboration between Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan since the 1996 action classic Ghatak. Taurani congratulated Aparna Purohit and Aamir Khan for producing what he called “a beautifully made film with a powerful message”.
The film was originally titled Lahore 1947 but was later renamed to Batwara 1947. The makers released a motion poster confirming the release date.
