Jeremy Strong , known for his intense method acting in Succession, is taking on one of the most controversial figures in modern technology. He plays Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in the upcoming film The Social Reckoning, a follow-up to the 2010 Oscar-winning drama The Social Network. Before filming began, Strong did something unexpected – he sent an email to Zuckerberg himself.
The 47-year-old actor revealed in a new GQ profile that he personally reached out to the Facebook co-founder after accepting the role. Strong wanted to make sure Zuckerberg knew he was taking the responsibility seriously.
“I wrote to him – I’m probably going to give Sony an aneurysm – I sent him an email. Just to say that I take this responsibility very seriously, and the veracity of it seriously, and I’m approaching it with respect.”
Strong confirmed that Zuckerberg replied to his email. However, the actor chose not to share what the tech billionaire said in his response.
Why Strong Felt He Needed to Contact Zuckerberg
Strong did not reach out to Zuckerberg for approval or permission. He wanted to communicate his commitment to accuracy and fairness in portraying a living person who remains a major public figure.
The actor acknowledged that Zuckerberg is not popular in American culture. But Strong believes an actor should not play such a character simply to condemn him.
“Listen, I know that he is a reviled person and not a popular person in our culture, but I do not think you should have an actor playing him who wants to set out to condemn him.”
Strong described feeling an “enormous sense of weight and responsibility” about the role. He sees his job as understanding and defending Zuckerberg’s point of view, not delivering a verdict on him.
“My job is to understand and defend his point of view and fight his fight.”
How Strong Prepared for the Role
Strong went far beyond sending an email to prepare for the part. He conducted deep research into Zuckerberg’s public life.
The actor watched every interview he could find. He studied podcast appearances, magazine profiles, and recordings of Zuckerberg speaking at technology events. Strong also watched footage of Zuckerberg testifying before Congress.
What makes his preparation unusual is that Strong does not normally use social media. Yet he created a Facebook account specifically to examine Zuckerberg’s posts from the beginning. This allowed him to track how Zuckerberg presented himself publicly over the years.
Strong also remained in character throughout production. This method acting practice has become closely associated with his performances. His friend Bradley Cooper joked with GQ that Strong had effectively spoken with Zuckerberg repeatedly – even though Zuckerberg himself never had that friendship with Strong.
Interestingly, Strong said that even if Zuckerberg had invited him to spend time at Meta, he probably would have declined. His preparation required contact, but also distance.
What ‘The Social Reckoning’ Is About
The Social Reckoning serves as a companion piece to The Social Network. While the 2010 film covered Zuckerberg’s creation of Facebook during his Harvard days, this new movie moves into the late 2010s and 2020.
The story follows Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, who leaked internal documents to The Wall Street Journal in 2021. Jeremy Allen White plays reporter Jeff Horwitz, who worked with Haugen to investigate the company’s practices.
Aaron Sorkin returns as writer and also steps into the director’s chair. David Fincher directed the first film.
The cast also includes Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, and Billy Magnussen.
Zuckerberg’s Response and Previous Portrayals
Strong is not the first actor to play Zuckerberg. Jesse Eisenberg portrayed the Facebook founder in The Social Network and received an Oscar nomination for his performance.
Eisenberg was asked to return for the new film but declined. He told Variety in June that he is “moving in different directions in my life” and no longer wants “to be associated with that character.”
Sorkin spent three days trying to convince Eisenberg to come back, but the actor refused. The writer-director noted that Eisenberg “simply did not want to be conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore” and has “his problems with the guy.”
Eisenberg previously tried to meet Zuckerberg while preparing for The Social Network. He recalled driving to Facebook’s office but getting a call from producer Scott Rudin telling him not to go. Rudin said Sony lawyers advised against it for legal reasons.
Zuckerberg has publicly criticized The Social Network, calling it inaccurate. He said in 2014 that the film “made up a bunch of stuff that I found kind of hurtful.”
Divided Fan Reactions to Strong’s Portrayal
The first trailer for The Social Reckoning arrived in June. Strong’s performance has already generated strong reactions online.
Some viewers think Strong could earn another Oscar nomination. Others have predicted a Razzie nomination – the award for the worst performances. Strong views this split reaction positively.
He called the divided response “the greatest endorsement” of what he was trying to do. “I’ll be sad if I win a Razzie, but that’s the place you want to be,” Strong said. “That’s the wager you have to make.”
The actor compared his approach to playing Zuckerberg to Sebastian Stan playing Donald Trump in The Apprentice or Jeremy Allen White playing Bruce Springsteen in Deliver Me From Nowhere. Strong appeared in both of those films as well.
Strong made it clear that his version of Zuckerberg will be completely different from Eisenberg’s portrayal. He has said Eisenberg’s take “has nothing to do with what I’m going to do.”

The Social Reckoning is scheduled to release exclusively in theatres on October 9, 2026.
Sony Pictures has confirmed the theatrical release date. The film will not be available on streaming platforms upon release.
