Josh Brolin’s Cable has been missing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Deadpool 2 in 2018. A new report claimed Ryan Reynolds wanted him back for Deadpool 4, but Rob Liefeld, the co-creator of both Deadpool and Cable, has now shared a response that puts the actor’s Marvel future in a very different light. The update arrived during a convention appearance on October 12, 2026, and it changes how fans should look at the whole situation.

What The New Report Actually Says

A July 2026 report from industry insider Daniel Richtman claimed that Ryan Reynolds is working on a team-up style Deadpool film. The plan reportedly includes Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Josh Brolin’s Cable, and Halle Berry’s Storm joining the Merc with a Mouth on screen together.

The same report suggested that this project could reduce Deadpool to a “supporting” role, focusing more on the group than on Wade Wilson alone. This lines up with comments Reynolds made earlier, where he said he sees Deadpool as a character who works best in a group.

Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed Deadpool 4 yet. The film is not in active production, and no release date has been set. Everything so far comes from insider reports and unconfirmed leaks.

Rob Liefeld’s Honest Response

Rob Liefeld spoke with The Direct at MultiCon 2026 and was asked directly about the Cable rumors. His answer was careful but hopeful.

“I could call Josh Brolin right now and see if that’s true, but unfortunately, we can’t do that on camera,” Liefeld said. “Look, nobody wants Cable back more in front of the live audience than me”.

Liefeld also pointed out that Brolin has become one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood. He mentioned that directors like Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneuve, and Zach Cregger are all calling him for projects. Brolin is set to appear in the upcoming film Whalefall.

“Maybe Cable is not something he’s interested in anymore, but I would hope, given the opportunity, he would return,” Liefeld added. “I think there was so much more meat on those bones”.

This is the key update. Liefeld is not confirming the return. He is saying that the door is open, but the decision depends on whether Brolin himself wants to come back.

Why Cable Was Missing From Deadpool & Wolverine

Cable did not appear in Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, even though the film brought back many characters from the Fox X-Men era. The movie made a joke about it, with Deadpool saying that Cable and the rest of X-Force “didn’t test well in the focus group”.

Liefeld has been very open about his frustration with this. He claimed that Marvel Studios blocked Cable’s return and called it an “all-time b**** move” in a post on X back in January 2025.

The decision to leave Cable out disappointed many fans who felt the character deserved a proper MCU introduction.

What Happened With The Canceled X-Force Movie

Before Disney bought Fox in 2019, there were plans for an X-Force movie that would have continued the story from Deadpool 2. Liefeld confirmed at MultiCon 2026 that Josh Brolin was “really excited” about the project and had signed a multi-picture deal to play Cable.

The canceled film would have featured Stryfe as the main villain, with Brolin potentially playing both Cable and Stryfe as a twist. That project never moved forward after the Disney acquisition, leaving those plans unfinished.

This detail matters because it shows that Brolin was committed to the role at one point. The question now is whether that interest still exists after years of waiting.

The Other Characters In The Rumored Team-Up

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is the first name on the rumored list. His return in Deadpool & Wolverine was a massive success, helping the film become the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. Reports suggest Marvel wants to keep the Deadpool and Wolverine pairing going, possibly with appearances in Avengers: Doomsday in December 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.

Halle Berry’s Storm is the third name in the rumor. Berry played Storm in four X-Men films, most recently in X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014. She has not appeared in the MCU yet. Reports say Marvel is looking to cast a younger Storm for its upcoming X-Men reboot, so it is unclear whether Berry would return or if a new version of the character would be introduced in Deadpool 4.

Josh Brolin is the second name and the one drawing the most attention. His Cable was a standout in Deadpool 2, and fans have been waiting for his MCU debut since then.

What This Means For Brolin’s Marvel Future

Josh Brolin has played two major Marvel roles: Thanos in the Infinity Saga and Cable in Deadpool 2. He has said in past interviews that he would return as Thanos “pretty quickly” if asked, but he has been less clear about Cable.

The new update from Liefeld suggests that Brolin’s return as Cable is not a guaranteed thing. The actor has a busy schedule and may have moved on from the role. At the same time, Liefeld’s comments leave room for hope. If the right script and the right offer come along, the door is still open.

Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that another Deadpool movie is in development. The Hollywood Reporter also confirmed that a fourth film is seemingly in the works. Reynolds has teased that the next film could draw from comic runs like Cable & Deadpool by Fabian Nicieza, which would make Cable a natural fit.

No official announcements have been made about casting, release dates, or production schedules for Deadpool 4. Fans waiting for Cable’s MCU return will need to watch for updates from Marvel Studios or from Reynolds himself.
