The ‘Severance’ star appeared on ‘The Tonight Show’ and shared how his daughter’s acting teacher used his old audition tape as a lesson on what not to do when trying to land a role.
Adam Scott might be a famous actor now, but his failed audition for The Office came back to haunt him in the most unexpected way. During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Scott told a funny story about his daughter Frankie and an awkward moment in her acting class.
Scott, who currently stars in Apple TV’s hit series Severance, revealed that his 18-year-old daughter was enrolled in a summer acting program in New York City. On the very first day of class, the teacher decided to show two audition tapes to the students. One was Scott’s failed audition for the role of Jim Halpert on The Office. The other was John Krasinski‘s successful audition for the same role.
Teacher Used Scott’s Audition as ‘What Not to Do’
The teacher then asked the class a question that made the situation even more uncomfortable for Scott’s daughter. According to Scott, the instructor told the students: “Let’s discuss why he got the job, and he didn’t”.
Scott explained that the teacher had no idea his daughter was sitting in that classroom. The Severance actor said: “I’m just happy to know that, like, in a prestigious acting class, I’m the subject of what not to do”.
Scott joked about the whole situation with his usual self-deprecating humor. He seemed to take the embarrassment in stride, finding the funny side of being used as a cautionary example for young actors.
Frankie Was ‘Mortified’ by the Experience
Scott’s daughter did not enjoy the experience at all. He told Fallon that Frankie was “mortified” when she realized her father’s failed audition was being used as a teaching tool.
The teacher eventually figured out that Frankie was related to one of the actors on the screen. Scott recalled: “When she was walking out, the teacher stopped her. He’s like, ‘Hey, um, do you know one of them?’ and then he kind of put two and two together with her last name, and he felt terrible”.
Despite the awkwardness, Scott said the teacher should not feel bad. He even suggested that the instructor should keep using his audition as an example in future classes.
Scott Later Found Success on ‘Parks and Recreation’
While Scott did not get the role of Jim Halpert, he did not stay unemployed for long. He went on to star in another NBC comedy, Parks and Recreation, where he played Ben Wyatt. The show ran from 2009 to 2015 and became a fan favorite.
Scott also mentioned that he worked with The Office writers Mike Schur and Greg Daniels on Parks and Recreation. This shows that even though he didn’t get the part, he still built strong relationships in the industry.
Krasinski, who got the role, went on to become a major star. He played Jim Halpert for nine seasons and later directed and starred in the successful A Quiet Place movies.
Scott Shares Update on ‘Severance’ Season 3
During the same Tonight Show appearance, Scott gave a small update on Severance Season 3. He confirmed that he is currently filming the third season of the Apple TV drama in New York.
Scott said it has been almost two years since they finished shooting the second season. However, he could not share any details about the new season’s plot. He also admitted that he does not know when the season will premiere.
Fans of the show have been waiting for news about the new season. The series, which follows employees at a mysterious company called Lumon Industries, has received critical praise and multiple Emmy nominations for Scott.
Scott Has a New Movie Coming to Netflix
In addition to Severance, Scott has another project on the way. He is starring alongside Robert De Niro in the new movie The Whisper Man, which will release on Netflix on August 28.
The film is based on the popular novel of the same name. Scott plays a lead role in the thriller, which adds to his growing list of film and television credits.
