What Happened in Episode 5?
Episode 5, titled “Makezaru Monotachi” (The Unyielding Ones), aired on August 14, 2026. The episode delivered intense battle sequences and major developments for the Suwa forces.
The Battle Pivot
The episode opened with the Suwa forces holding a strong position against the enemy. However, the battle took a sudden turn when Kiyohara, the regional governor, entered the fight with a combat palanquin. This was no ordinary palanquin—it was carried by armed men and allowed Kiyohara to fire arrows from a protected position. The unusual tactic caught the Suwa forces off guard.
Kiyohara had previously fled from battle after Fubuki cut off his eboshi hat. He had gone to Emperor Go-Daigo to admit he could not govern Shinano. But the Emperor encouraged him, reminding Kiyohara that he had been appointed because the Emperor saw ambition and spirit in him. This renewed Kiyohara’s determination, and he returned to the battlefield with renewed energy.
Breaking Through
The Hoshina faction did not stay defensive for long. Fubuki relayed the combat palanquin’s weakness to the troops. They concentrated their attacks on its vulnerable points, and once the palanquin lost balance, cavalry from Hoshina and Shino forces struck from the side, toppling it. Kiyohara’s strategy was defeated.
A New Threat Emerges
Just as the Suwa forces thought the battle was won, Tokiyuki noticed something shining on the mountain behind the Shino forces. The light was sunlight reflecting off weapons—someone was hiding in the mountains.
Tokiyuki rushed to warn the Shino forces, but the samurai did not believe him. Tokiyuki realized only one person could be behind this: Shokan, the bandit leader he had previously defeated in one-on-one combat. Shokan is known for his cunning, careful planning, and skill at launching surprise attacks from the mountains.
The episode ended with Shokan’s forces preparing to strike, setting up a dangerous situation for the Suwa army in the coming episodes.
About The Elusive Samurai
The Elusive Samurai is based on the manga by Yusei Matsui, which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2021 to 2026. The story is set between the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, during the Kenmu Restoration.
The anime follows Hojo Tokiyuki, the young heir of the Hojo clan, who survives the fall of the Kamakura Shogunate after his family is overthrown by Ashikaga Takauji. With only a few allies, including the priest Yorishige Suwa, Tokiyuki must use his extraordinary ability to flee and hide as he works to reclaim his family’s honor and restore the Hojo clan.
The second season, produced by CloverWorks and distributed by Aniplex, continues Tokiyuki’s journey as he gathers allies and develops his skills. The season is scheduled for 12 episodes.
