Priyanka Chopra Jonas recently opened up about her marriage to Nick Jonas, sharing a candid truth about what made her fall in love with him. The actress said she might not have loved the singer if he had not shown genuine respect for her Indian culture and traditions. Speaking at the premiere of her documentary “Cycle of Love” in New York, Priyanka made it clear that cultural respect is non-negotiable for her.
The 44-year-old actress, who has built a successful career across Bollywood and Hollywood, emphasised that understanding where a partner comes from is essential when two people from different backgrounds build a life together. Her comments have struck a chord with fans worldwide, as her interracial marriage with the Jonas Brothers member continues to inspire many couples navigating multicultural relationships.
Why Cultural Respect Was a Dealbreaker for Priyanka
Priyanka did not hold back when asked about Nick’s respect for her Indian heritage. In an interview with E! News, she said, “I don’t know if I’d love him if he didn’t. That is a big part of any story or any relationship that is multicultural. I think it’s really important to have a sense of respect for your partner’s roots”.
The actress explained that when two people come from different cultural backgrounds, respect for each other’s roots becomes a foundation for the relationship. For Priyanka, this was not just a nice addition to their marriage but a necessary condition for her love to grow. She grew up in India, while Nick comes from the United States, and she believes that bridging that gap requires genuine effort from both sides.

Karva Chauth is a Hindu festival where married women fast from sunrise to moonrise for their husbands’ well-being.
Calling him deeply romantic, Priyanka said, “Apne plane mein clouds ke upar leke gaye aur chaand dekh ke vrat toda” (He took me above the clouds in his plane and I broke my fast after seeing the moon). This gesture showed that Nick did not just tolerate her traditions but actively participated in them in a meaningful way.
How Priyanka and Nick’s Love Story Began
Priyanka and Nick first sparked dating rumours after appearing together at the 2017 Met Gala. Their relationship progressed quickly, with Nick proposing in July 2018 after just two months of dating. The singer reportedly shut down the Tiffany & Co. store in London while looking for an engagement ring weeks before the proposal.
Nick has said he knew early on that Priyanka was the one for him. Their romance began after he sent her a direct message on Twitter in 2016, suggesting they meet. They attended the Met Gala together in 2017 but did not start seriously dating until the following year. The couple welcomed their daughter Malti via surrogate in January 2022.

Priyanka was in New York for the premiere of “Cycle of Love,” a documentary she served as an executive producer on. The film follows the real-life love story of K. Mahanandia and Lotta Von Schedvin, who travelled across countries decades ago to be together. Mahanandia, a Delhi street artist from a Dalit family, travelled 6,000 miles across multiple countries on a bicycle at just 23 years old in 1977 to find the Swedish woman he believed he was destined to marry.
The documentary’s story of resilience and love across borders clearly resonates with Priyanka, who has built her own跨cultural marriage with Nick. She said the film taught her about “resilience, standing by the person that you love”.
