More than two decades after audiences fell in love with Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry’s chaotic romance, Paramount Pictures is officially bringing back the beloved romantic comedy. Kate Hudson is attached to produce the project, with studio executives hoping to reunite her with Matthew McConaughey for a follow-up to the 2003 classic.
The sequel is in early development, with no screenwriter attached yet and plot details still being worked out. While neither Hudson nor McConaughey have officially signed on to star, sources confirm the intention is to have both actors reprise their iconic roles.
Kate Hudson Takes Producer Role for the Sequel
Kate Hudson is not just attached to star in the potential sequel—she is also producing the project alongside Stacey Sher through her Shiny Penny banner. Sher brings a impressive resume to the table, with producer credits including Pulp Fiction, Erin Brockovich, Gattaca, Vanilla Sky, and Django Unchained.
The film is being set up at Paramount, with Hudson’s role as producer making it highly likely she will reprise her character Andie Anderson. Development is still in its earliest phases, and the project is currently searching for a screenwriter. Casting decisions will depend on the direction the script takes.
Will Matthew McConaughey Return as Benjamin Barry
The big question on every fan’s mind is whether Matthew McConaughey will return as the charming advertising executive Benjamin Barry. While nothing is confirmed yet, studio executives and filmmakers are reportedly planning for McConaughey to reprise his role.
McConaughey has spoken fondly about the film in recent years. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he called it “probably my favorite romcom I’ve done” and revealed it still pays him the best residuals of any film in his career.
“It still pays the best mailbox money of any film I’ve ever done, by far.”
He also mentioned that every March he receives a big check because of Valentine’s Day viewings.
Hudson and McConaughey Have Long Supported a Sequel
The two stars have been open about returning to their roles for years. In a 2024 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Hudson said she and McConaughey would consider doing a sequel if they “were into the script”.
Hudson has also imagined where Andie and Ben would be today:
“I’ve always thought about what Matthew and I’s characters would be now, if we were still together. It’s probably actually a good amount of time [that has passed] to make a movie about it. We probably would have gotten married with kids. We’re probably miserable right now!”
In another interview, she said:
“All that matters would be the script and if Matthew and I were into the script. I think we’re both totally open; it has just never happened.”
Hudson previously explained what it would take for a sequel to happen:
“Honestly, it’s just so funny because I’ve been getting asked this question for that long. At some point I feel like we just need to bite the bullet and do it.”
The Original Film’s Massive Success
The 2003 romantic comedy was a box office hit, grossing nearly $180 million worldwide on a reported $50 million budget. Directed by Donald Petrie, the film followed magazine columnist Andie Anderson, who set out to make a man fall in love with her and then drive him away in 10 days for an article.
Meanwhile, advertising executive Benjamin Barry made a bet with his boss that he could make any woman fall for him. Their competing schemes created the perfect storm of romantic comedy chaos.
The supporting cast included Kathryn Hahn, Adam Goldberg, Thomas Lennon, Michael Michele, and Shalom Harlow.

As of now, there is no confirmed plot, no attached screenwriter, and no official cast announcements. The project is in early development at Paramount, with Kate Hudson producing alongside Stacey Sher.
The intention is for both Hudson and McConaughey to return, but nothing is locked in yet. Casting will ultimately depend on the script’s direction. The sequel does not yet have a working title or release date.
Hudson recently earned her second Oscar nomination for her role in 2025’s Song Sung Blue. Her first nomination came for Almost Famous. She also stars in the Netflix sports comedy series Running Point.
McConaughey, who won an Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club, has consciously stepped away from romantic comedies in recent years, making his potential return all the more significant for fans.
