Country music legend Dolly Parton passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. But she left behind one final musical surprise for her fans – a secret song that almost nobody has ever heard.
The unreleased track, titled “My Place in History,” sits locked inside a wooden box at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. “We do a lot of things at Dollywood, and one year we thought about it and they asked me if I’d write a song that no one would ever hear. I’d be dead, I’d be gone – or I might not be. Well, maybe not. I’ll be 99, you know me! I might still be hopping around! Anyway, I wrote a song and I put it in the box to be opened.”
But Parton admitted she had second thoughts about locking the song away. She told Clarkson that the track was really good and she wished she could replace it with something else.
“I don’t know whose damn idea that was,” Parton said of the secret track. “I figure the song probably disintegrate and nobody will ever hear it, that’s what bothers me. If it rots in there before they open it.”
In her 2020 memoir, she compared locking the tune away to “burying one of my kids” or “putting it on ice or something”. She wrote that it was “burning me up inside that I have to leave it in there”.
Where Is the Dream Box Located?
The Dream Box is on display at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. It sits in the lower-level lobby of the resort, inside a glass case.
According to a description next to the box, it reads: “This chestnut ‘Dream Box’ is a repository of Dolly’s memories and wishes for the future. It will not be opened until Dolly’s 100th birthday on January 19, 2046.”
The Dream Box itself is a tribute to her original mentor and uncle, Bill Owens, who worked to preserve the American Chestnut tree.
Dolly Parton’s Passing and Final Message
Dolly Parton died on August 25, 2026, at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville. Her death was announced by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, in an emotional video shared on her Instagram account. Seaver, who served as her head of security for more than two decades, said Parton had asked him years ago to make the announcement when the time came.
“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality,” Seaver said. “It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly.”
