HBO is adding a fresh comedy series to its lineup this September. The show is called Youth, and it comes from the mind of Sharon Horgan, the creator of hit shows like Catastrophe and Bad Sisters. Horgan not only created the series but also stars in it, writes the episodes, and serves as an executive producer.
The eight-episode season will premiere on Sunday, September 20, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will also be available to stream on HBO Max. The first two episodes will drop on the premiere night, with new episodes following weekly. The season will wrap up with its finale on Sunday, November 1.
What Is Youth About?
The comedy series centers on Alex, a 50-year-old divorced literary agent living in London. She is trying to figure out what she wants from life while getting back into the dating world. But Alex has a lot on her plate. She is raising a teenage son, caring for her aging parents, and managing a demanding career. The show follows her search for sex and love while she juggles all these responsibilities.
The official logline from HBO describes it as a story about a “50-year-old divorcee’s search for sex and love whilst juggling caring for her ailing parents and parenting her should-be grown up son”. The trailer gives a look at Alex trying to find happiness again, with her character saying, “I need to meet someone now”.
Sharon Horgan as Alex
Sharon Horgan takes on the lead role of Alex. She is the heart of the series, a woman in her 50s who is divorced and ready to find love and connection again. But her life is complicated. She has a teenage son who still depends on her, parents who need her care, and a job that keeps her busy.
Horgan is no stranger to creating and starring in her own shows. She is known for Catastrophe, Bad Sisters, Motherland, and Divorce. With Youth, she is bringing a story that feels personal and real. The character Alex is trying to balance her own desires with her duties as a mother and daughter.
Rupert Friend as Patrick
Rupert Friend plays Patrick, a 47-year-old single man from Scotland. Patrick is described as charming and carefree. He has never really had to think about settling down or long-term relationships. He does not feel the pressure of a biological clock or the need to build a future with someone.
Alex knows Patrick may not be the easiest person to build a future with. But she is still drawn to him. Friend is known for his work in Anatomy of a Scandal and other film and TV projects.
Sharlene Whyte as Sam
Sharlene Whyte plays Sam, who is Alex’s best friend and also her boss. Sam cares about Alex and wants to see her happy. But she also has a practical side. Instead of encouraging Alex to chase complicated romances, Sam keeps trying to set her up with older men who she thinks might be a better match.
Whyte has appeared in Mr. Loverman and other British television series.
Aran Murphy as Ruari
Aran Murphy plays Ruari, Alex’s teenage son. Ruari is struggling emotionally as he gets closer to leaving for university. Even though he is supposed to be becoming more independent, he still depends on his mother for major things.
The show gets some of its humor from Ruari overhearing Alex talk openly about sex and dating. These moments make him feel awkward and add comedy to the story. Murphy is the son of Academy Award-winning actor Cillian Murphy.
Robbie Gee as Frank
Robbie Gee is part of the main cast as Frank. His character details have not been widely shared yet. For now, his role remains less clear than the others, but he is part of the central group around Alex. Gee has appeared in Supacell and other projects.
Supporting Cast Members
The comedy series also includes some familiar faces in recurring roles.
Harriet Walter appears in the trailer, giving Alex some direct medical advice. Walter is known for her role in Succession.
Anne Reid has also joined the cast in a recurring role. Reid starred in The Sixth Commandment and the long-running series Last Tango in Halifax.
Freddie Fox is another familiar face in the series. Fox has appeared in House of the Dragon and the spy thriller Slow Horses.
More details about what characters Reid and Fox play have not been revealed yet. But viewers can expect plenty of humorous moments throughout the show.

Youth is produced by Merman, the production company behind shows like Amandaland, Bad Sisters, and Vladimir. Horgan writes and executive produces the series.
The additional executive producers are Faye Dorn for Merman, Jim Kleverweis, and Dawn Shadforth. Dawn Shadforth also directs the series.
Trailer and First Look
HBO released the first trailer for Youth on August 27. The trailer gives viewers a look at Horgan’s character Alex as she navigates dating, parenting, and caring for her parents. The show’s humor comes from the messy and relatable situations Alex finds herself in.
In the trailer, Alex is seen looking for love and dealing with the challenges of being a 50-year-old woman in the dating world. The series is described as a comedy-drama that explores life, love, and getting older.
