The first footage from the upcoming psychological thriller Josephine has arrived, and it shows Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan facing every parent’s worst fear. The clip, which recently surfaced online, gives audiences a look at the intense emotional struggle of two parents trying to protect their daughter after she witnesses a horrible crime.
The movie, which already won top awards at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of an eight-year-old girl named Josephine. She sees a violent s*xual assault while on a morning run with her father in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. What follows is a painful journey for the entire family as they try to deal with what happened.
The Dinner Table Scene That Changes Everything
The clip shows a quiet dinner scene that quickly turns tense. Channing Tatum plays Damien, and Gemma Chan plays Claire, Josephine’s parents. They are sitting at the dinner table with their daughter when Claire asks, “Jojo, do you have any questions about today?”.
Josephine’s response is shocking. She asks, “When can I have a gun?”. This simple question shows how deeply the trauma has affected her. She wants to protect herself and others from what she saw.
Damien quickly shuts down the idea, saying he does not want those things in the house. Claire tries to explain that it is the parents’ job to keep kids safe. But Josephine pushes further, asking why the victim’s parents were not there in the park. This question stumps both parents.
Damien tries to comfort his daughter by promising, “that’s never going to happen to you…never”. But Claire does not agree with making such a promise. This moment shows the first crack in how they handle the situation together.
Channing Tatum Opens Up About Difficult Scenes
Channing Tatum admitted that filming these intense moments gave him some anxiety. He explained that it is a tough situation for any parent to handle. He struggles with two conflicting responsibilities: protecting his daughter from danger while also letting her understand and process what she witnessed.
Tatum spoke highly of his young co-star Mason Reeves, who plays Josephine. He said she consistently left him amazed with her performance. He shared his thoughts on working with her:
“As parents, they’re disagreeing on how to approach such a difficult situation, but it’s all happening right in front of her as the kid, and you can’t look away from how she plays it.”
Tatum also talked about making sure Reeves felt safe on set. He said he tried to make a clear distinction between himself and his character. He would reassure her before tough moments that he was only acting.
Gemma Chan Explains the Parents’ Breaking Point
Gemma Chan, known for her role in Marvel’s Eternals, described the dinner scene as the first moment where Claire and Damien’s unity starts to crack. She explained that up until that point, they believed they were in sync with each other.
Chan said the couple had not yet faced the kind of major test that was about to challenge them. She explained that their own experiences and past traumas had not come to the surface yet. The question their daughter asked forced them to face difficult truths.
Chan noted that Claire’s approach is not to lie to their daughter. She believes in being honest, even when the truth is painful. This puts her at odds with Damien, who wants to protect Josephine from harsh realities.
A 12-Year Journey to the Screen
The movie has a long history. Writer-director Beth de Araújo revealed that she had been trying to make Josephine for 12 years. She said it was supposed to be her first feature film, but the subject matter made it very challenging to put together.
De Araújo based the story on her own childhood experiences. She spoke about the long road to getting it made:
“I’ve been trying for 12 years [to get Josephine made]. This was supposed to be my first feature. I was at the Sundance directors lab with it. However, given the subject matter, it was incredibly challenging to piece together.”
Gemma Chan was attached to the project early on. But it was not until Channing Tatum signed on that they could finally make the movie.
Awards and Critical Praise
Josephine made its world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. It won both the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. This double win puts it in exclusive company. The last film to achieve this was CODA, which went on to win the Best Picture Oscar.
The movie also screened in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival. It will continue its festival run at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Critics have praised the film highly. Variety called it the “standout” of Sundance. One critic described Mason Reeves’ performance as “one of the great child performances of the decade”.
The Story Behind the Trauma
The official logline for Josephine explains the core conflict. After eight-year-old Josephine accidentally witnesses a crime in Golden Gate Park, she begins to act out violently to protect herself. This emotional trauma leads to conflicts between her parents as they search for justice and a way to feel safe again.
As a court case depends on her testimony, the parents must decide whether to let their daughter take the stand. The trailer shows a counselor asking Josephine, “If what you say you saw was so bad, why did you just watch from behind a tree?”.
The cast also includes Philip Ettinger as the perpetrator of the crime, along with Syra McCarthy and Eleanore Pienta.

Theatrical Release and Distribution
Sumerian Pictures acquired U.S. rights to Josephine for a mid-seven-figure sum. The studio has set a limited theatrical release for November 20, 2026. The rollout will expand nationwide on December 4, 2026.
The film has also secured distribution in the Indian subcontinent. Fragrant Nature Film Creations acquired exclusive rights covering India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Maldives.
